Qadr-The Twenty-Third Night of Ramadhan month- Specific A'amal

The Night of Qadr is the best night among the nights of the whole year. The "A'maal" (religious performances) of this night are better than the A'maal of 1000 months. In this night the divine Annual Decree is passed. The Angels and Roohul Ameen (A highly dignified Angel) descend on this earth, in that night. These call on the Imam of the time, and what is ordained (by Allah) for everybody is presented before the Imam.

The twenty-third night of Ramadhan, the last of the Qadr Nights, is more meritorious than the two previous ones, namely the nineteenth and the twenty-first. Many narrations confirm that it is the Qadr Night at which all affairs are decided. Apart from the General a'amal at the three Qadr Nights, there are other specific a'amal for the 23rd night: It is important to keep awake the entire night

First: It is recommended to recite Surahs of al-`Ankabut (No. 29) and al-Rum (No. 30). Imam al-Sadiq (a.s) is reported to have said, “Anyone who recites these two Surahs at this night will be included with the people of Paradise.”

Second: It is recommended to recite Surah of al-Dukhan (No. 44).

Third: It is recommended to repeat Surah of al-Qadr Thousand times.

Fourth: Recite the following famous supplication for the Imam of our time as many times as possible at this night: Allahhumma Kun le Valliek

Fifth: It is recommended to say the following supplication:

O Allah (please do) prolong my lifetime ...

O Allah: (please do) prolong my lifetime, allahumma imdud li fi `umri
And expand my sustenance, wa awsi` li fi rizqi
And make my  body healthy, wa asihha li jismi
And make me attain my hopes, wa ballighny amali
And if I am written with the unhappy ones, (please) erase my name from this list, wa in kuntu mina alashqya‘i famhuny mina alashqya‘i
And write it with the happy ones, waktubny mina alssu`ada‘i
For You have said in Your Book that You revealed to Your missioned Prophet, Your peace be upon him and his Household: fa’innaka qulta fi kitabika almunzali `ala nabiyyka almursali salawatuka `alayhi wa alihi:
“Allah makes to pass away and establishes what He pleases, and with Him is the basis of the Book.” yamhu allahu maiyasha‘u wa yuthbitu wa `indahu ‘ummu alkitabi

O Allah: (please), among the matters that You decide and make, allahumma ij`al fima taqdhy wa fima tuqaddiru
From among the inevitable affairs, mina alamri almahtumi
And from among the wise matters that You make distinct, wa fima tafruqu mina alamri alhakimi
At the Grand Night fi laylati alqadri
From among the act that is neither rejected nor altered, mina alqadha‘i alladhy la yuraddu wa la yubaddalu
That You decide me to be with the pilgrims to Your Holy House, an taktubany min hujjaji baytika alharami
At this year, fi `amy hadha
Those whose pilgrimage is admitted, almabruri hajjuhumu
Whose efforts are praised, almashkuri sa`yuhumu
Whose sins are forgiven, almaghfuri dhunubuhumu
And whose offenses and pardoned. almukaffari `anhum sayyi’atuhum
And (please), among the matters that You decide and make, waj`al fima tiqdhy wa tuqaddru
Decide to prolong my lifetime, an tutila `umri
And to expand my sustenance. wa tuwassi`a li fi rizqi

O He Who is intrinsic though He is evident, ya batinan fi ¨uhurihi
And He Who is evident though He is intrinsic; wia zahiran fi butunihi
O He Who is intrinsic that is not missed wa ya batinan laysa yakhfa
And He Who is evident but He cannot be seen; wa ya zahiran laysa yura
O He Who is described, but neither any other described thing nor can any boundary attain His Being; ya mawsufan la yablughu bikaynunatihi mawsufun wa la hadd mahdudun
O He Who is absent but not lost, wa ya gha’iban ghayra mafqudin
And He Who is present but not witnessed. wa ya shahidan ghayra mashhudin
When He is sought, He shall be obtained, yutlabu fayusabu
And neither the heavens, nor the earth nor can anything that is between them be empty of Him. wa lam yakhlu minhu alssamawatu wal-ardhu wa ma baynahuma tarfata `aynin
He cannot be realized by asking ‘How is He? layudraku bikayfin
And His place cannot be identified by asking, ‘Where is He?’ or ‘What is His place? wa la yu´ayyanu bi-ainin wa la bihaythin
You are verily the light of all lights and the Lord of all lords. anta nuru alnnuri wa rabb alarbabi
You have comprehended all things. ahatta bijami`i ala’umuri
Glory be to Him Whose like is nonexistent, subhana man laysa kamithilhi shay‘un
And He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing. wa huwa alssami`u albasiru!
Glory be to Him Who is in this state and nothing else can be ever in his state. subhana man huwa hkadha wa la hakadha ghayruh!

Then, one may pray for his needs.

Eighth: It is recommended to do a new ghusl (bathing), other than the first one, at the last hours of night. To spend the whole night with acts of worship, to visit the holy tomb of Imam al-Husayn (a.s), and to offer the one hundred Rak`ah prayer at this nigh

In ‘Tahdhib al-Ahkam’, Shaykh al-Tusiy has narrated that Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (a.s) instructed Abu-Basir to offer at the night that is expected to be the Qadr Night a prayer of one hunded Rak`ah reciting at each Rak`ah Surah of al-Fatihah once and repeating Surah of al-Tawhid ten times.

“If I fail to do all the movements of this prayer, what will I do?” asked Abu-Basir. “You may then offer it while sitting,” said Imam al-Sadiq (a.s). “What if I, too, fail to offer it while sitting?” asked Abu-Basir. “You may then offer it while lying on your bed,” said Imam al-Sadiq (a.s).

`Allamah al-Majlisi has confirmed that one should recite as much amount as possible from the Holy Qur'an at this night and should also pray with the supplications of the al-Sahifah al-Kamilah al-Sajjadiyyah in general and the supplications of Makarim al-Akhlaq and  al-Tawbah in particular.

Ninth : Another Du'a for the 23rd night: -

O Lord of Lailatul Qadr! (Night of Destiny!) Who has made it better than 1000 months! O the Lord of the day and the night and the mountains and oceans, the Lord of light and darkness! O the Lord of the earth and the skies! O the Creator! O the Designer! O Kind! O One Who favours! O Allah Who maintains everything! O Allah! O the Kindest! O Allah! O the Creator of new things! O Allah! O Allah! O Allah! The best names are for Thee alone. Thou hast control over all virtues. I ask Thee to send blessings on Muhammad (S.A.W.) and his Aal (A.S.). Write my name, in this Night of Qadr, among the names of the fortunate. Let my soul keep the company of the martyrs. Let my good deeds be reckoned with "Illiyeen" (those exalted). Forgive my sins. Bestow on me such belief that Thou may be nearest to my heart. Give me such understanding that all the doubts may be removed. Let me be contended over that which has been ordained for me: Let me have goodness and virtues in this world and the next. Save me from the glowing fire of Hell. Encourage me towards Tine remembrance with pleasure and to be penitent. Give me all those virtues that Thou hast given to Muhammad (S.A.W.) and Aal-e-Muhammad (AS).

Twelveth Al-Kaf`amiy has narrated that Imam Zayn al-`Abiden (a.s) used to say this supplication very frequently at the Qadr Nights while sitting, standing, genuflecting, and prostrating :

English Transliteration Arabic
O Allah: surely, I am at this evening Your passive slave; alluhumma inni amsaytu laka `abdan dakhiran
I have no control of hurt or good to myself, lu amliku linafsy naf`an wa lu zarran
And I cannot drive back any evil from myself wa lu asrifu `anhu su‘an
I testify to so against myself, ash-hadu bidhalika `alu nafse
And to You do I confess of my powerlessness wa a`tarifu laka bi¤a`fi quwwate
And my feebleness wa qillati helate
So, (please do) send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, fasall `alu muhammadin wa uli muhammadin
And fulfill that of which You have promised me, wa anjiz le mu wa`adtany
As well as all the believing men and women, wa jame`a almu´minena wal-mu´minuti
That is Your forgiveness at this night. mina almaghfirati fe hadhihi allaylati
And accomplish that which You have conferred upon me, wa atmim `alayya mu utaytany
For I am Your slave—the poor, the humble, fa’inne `abduka almiskenu almustakenu
The weak, the needy, the humiliated. aldha`efu alfaqeru almahenu
O Allah: (please) do not make me negligent of the mention of You as regards that which You have bestowed upon me, alluhumma lu taj`alny nusiyan lidhikrika femu awlaytane
And do not make me inadvertent to Your favors to me as regards that which You have given me, wa lu ghufilan liihsunika femu a`taytane
And do not make me despair of Your responding to me, even if such response is postponed, wa lu uyisan min ijubatika wa in abtat `anne
Whether I be in prosperity or adversity fe sarru‘a awdharru‘a
Or hardship or comfort aw shiddatin aw rakhu‘in
Or well-being or ordeal, aw `ufiyatin aw balu‘in
Or misery or bliss. aw bu´sin aw na`mu‘a
Verily, You are the Hearer of prayers. innaka same`u alddu`u‘i
