Sa'adi

Sa'adi

Sheikh Moshref Al-Din Mosleh Bin Abdullah Bin Moshref Sa'adi Al-Shirazi, born in the lunar year 606. He headed for resuming his studies in Baghdad in the year 620 or 621, after that he commenced his long journeys in Hijaz, Sham and Lebanon.
With regard to those journeys, he said:

I went around remote parts of the world and lived with different types of people and scrutinized every corner and location, I found in every field a spike.
His journey started in the lunar year 620 and terminated in the year 655 in Shiraz city. Then it was followed by another journey to the holy city of Mecca, Sa'adi returned to his city Shiraz via Tabriz.

Sa'adi pointed to that trip in the sixth letter of the remained poems. Sa'adi wrote down all his trips around the world in two books, the garden and roses’ garden in a very interesting narrative frame.

In the book titled roses’ garden, there are many stories regarding Hajj and pilgrims, as follows:
“A swindler entered the city with the caravan that arrived from Mecca; he alleged that he was an Alawi (Sayed) returning from Hajj, he went to the royal court in the palace and recited a piece of poem belonged to me! One of boon companions of the king that returned from a journey said to him:

I saw this man in Basra city during Eid (Grand Bairum), how could he be in Hajj? Another fellow added: His father was Christian in Malatiah, how could he be a Sayed (Alawi)?
His poem was found in poetical works of Anwari, and then the king ordered to be beaten and exiled due to his multiple lies! That man said: Why? O king! I shall tell your majesty another tale, and if it was a lie then punish me according to that lie! What is it? The king said.

If an alien handed you a pot of yoghurt, then hardly you could get out of it a glass of water and a cup of yoghurt, and if you heard nonsense from me please do not get angry, what numerous lies has that who claims he went around the entire world!
The king laughed and told that man: You never said a story in your life more truthful than this one! Then the king ordered to treat that person in a good way and provided him with what he wanted”!

Sa'adi added: I saw a dervish I front of holy Kaaba rubbing his cheek on the ground and saying:

“O you who are merciful and forgiving! You are aware of what should an aggressor present to the almighty God, I came here along with an excuse for my wrongdoing, disobedient individuals leave behind their sins, and scholars ask forgiveness for their worshipping. Worshippers ask rewards for their obedience while merchants ask for a price in lieu of their obedience! I’m your slave came here on hope not because of obedience, I’m a beggar not a merchant! If you killed me or forgave me for my sins and wrongdoings you would find me obedient and submissive, I have no choice rather than what you ordain, I’m at your beck and call”!

At the door of holy Kaaba I saw a beggar crying and saying:

“I’m not asking you my God accept my obedience and forgive my sins”!
One night when I was in Mecca’s valleys and plain deserts, I was so tired to the extent that I couldn’t walk then I got sleep, prior to that I told the cameleer leave me alone! How long could this poor man walk? He replied:

“O my brother! The holy shrine is in front of you and the thieves are following you! If you carried on you would win, and if you slept you would die!
An individual walked with Hajj caravan bared-head and bare footed from Kufa, he was walking slow and said:

I’m not like a load of a camel or a donkey, and I’m not responsible of the citizens, I’m not either Abdul Malik or Shahryar’s servant, I have no grief or worries, away of any anxiety or disturbance, living my life in peace of mind!
The cameleer asked him: Where are you going dervish? Don’t die in appalling way! He heard that and headed towards the desert! When we reached a palm tree one guy died there, that dervish approached him and said to him: We didn’t die while we were walking but you were on a strong red camel and now you are near the death!

An individual cried all night near the head of a sick man, and in the morning he died and that sick man remained alive!
How many strong horses got tired and couldn’t follow enemies, and how many weak horses continued the battle till the end!
How many strong and brave warriors were buried, and how many injured and weak warriors didn’t die and never buried!

In my journey to Mecca I accompanied some youths who were mumbling some verses of poems, in our group there was a scholar who wouldn’t care of them or what they were suffering, while we were in our way a child came out of Arabs quarter and sang a song that kept all birds silent and prevented them from flying, even the camel of that scholar was agitated in joy and delight in a way that it threw the scholar to the ground and run towards the desert! I said: O sheikh! That song affected the ears of that animal and you still don’t move! Do you know what he told me?

He said: That was nightingale of magic, what kind of human who knows nothing of love you are! That camel was delighted by Arabic poem; if you don’t have a taste then you your nature resembles that animal’s!

A shabby man accompanied us in Hajj caravan, an Arabic prince granted him a hundred Dinars to expend it on his family, but robbers attacked the caravan and took all pilgrims’ belongings, all merchants cried and screamed after that incident except that shabby man, he remained silent, I said: Didn’t they take your money? He replied: Yes! But I wouldn’t care for that!

Beware of clinging to money or a thing or even a person, what difficult it would be for you to desist from money and that person!!!
