In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book (which makes the truth) manifest.
2. Verily We have sent it down, the Arabic Qur’an, so that you may understand.
3. We narrate to you (O Our Prophet Muhammad) the most excellent of narratives by (means of) what We have revealed to you, this Qur’an; though before this you were unaware.
4. Joseph said to his father (Jacob): “O my father! Verily I saw (in a vision) eleven stars, the sun, and the moon, all prostrating to me.”
5. He (Jacob) said: “O my son! (Beware!) Do not relate your dream to your brothers lest they should plot against you a (wicked) plot. Verily Satan is an open enemy to man.
6. “And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of sayings (visions), and perfect His Grace unto you and the children of Jacob even as He perfected it to your [fore]fathers aforetime, Abraham and Isaac. Verily your Lord is all-Knowing, all-Wise.”
7. Indeed, in (the accounts of) Joseph and his brothers there are signs for the inquirers.
8. They said: “Surely Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we are, though we are a bigger group. Verily our father is in manifest error.
9. “(So) slay Joseph! Or cast him out to some (other) land, so that to you (exclusively) will be the attention of your father, and you may be after that a righteous people.”
10. A speaker among them said: “Do not slay Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well, perhaps some wayfarers may take him up, if you must do it.”
11. They said: “O our father! What causes you not to trust us regarding Joseph? Verily, we are his well-wishers.
12. “Send him with us tomorrow so that he may enjoy himself and play, and we will surely be his guards.”
13. He said: “It certainly saddens me that you should take him away, and I fear the wolf might devour him while you are inattentive to him.”
14. They said: “If the wolf were to devour him while we are (such a large group), verily then we should be losers.”
15. So when they had gone with him and agreed to put him in the bottom of the well, We revealed to him (to Joseph, saying): “You will (one day) most surely tell them of this deed of theirs while they cannot recognize (you).”
16. And they came to their father at nightfall weeping.
17. They said: “O our father! Verily we went racing and left Joseph by our belongings, then a wolf devoured him, but you will not believe us, even if we are truthful.”
18. They came with his shirt (stained) with fake blood. He said: “Nay! You have beguiled your (guilty) selves into something, yet (my course is) patience, and God is He Whose aid is sought against what you describe.”
19. There came a caravan, and they sent their water drawer and he let down his bucket. He said: “O good news! This is a youth!” And they concealed him as an article of merchandise, and verily God was the Knower of all that they were doing.
20. And they sold him for a paltry price, a few counted dirhams, and they had no interest in him.
21. And the Egyptian who purchased him said to his wife: “Give him an honourable place, maybe he will benefit us, or maybe we will adopt him as a son.” Thus did We establish Joseph in the land (Egypt) and that We may teach him the interpretation of events (seen in visions). Indeed God is Predominant over his affairs, though most people do not know.
22. When he (Joseph) attained his prime (maturity), We bestowed upon him authority (prophethood) and knowledge, and thus do We recompense those who do good deeds.
23. She, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him from his (pure) self, and she (even) locked the doors and said: “Now come!” He said: “(I seek) God’s refuge! Verily He is my Lord! He made my abode good; verily the unjust ones do not prosper.”
24. Indeed she longed for him, and he (also) would have longed for her, had he not seen the evidence of his Lord. Thus it was that We might turn away from him (all) evil and shameful deeds; verily he was (one) of Our (true) servants.
25. They both raced to the door, and she rent his shirt from behind, and they met her husband at the door. She said: “What is the punishment for the one who intends to commit an evil act to your wife save that he be imprisoned or painfully tormented?”
26. He (Joseph) said: “(But) she sought to seduce me from my (pure) self.” A witness of her own household testified: “If his shirt is rent from the front, she speaks the truth while he lies,
27. “But if his shirt is rent from behind, then she lies while he is the truthful one.”
28. So when he (husband) saw the shirt rent from behind, he said: “Verily it is a guile act of you women! Verily your guile is great!
29. “O Joseph! Leave this affair, and you (wife) ask forgiveness for your sins; verily you are of the guilty (ones).”
30. The women in the city said: “The wife of the great al-`Aziz (chief) seeks to seduce her slave from his (pure) self. Verily he has affected her deeply with love. Verily we see her in manifest error.”
31. When she heard of their scheming talk, she sent (inviting) them, and she prepared for them a repast, and, giving each one of them a knife, she called (on Joseph saying): “Come out to them.” So when they saw him, they extolled him, and (in their amazement) cut their hands and said (amazingly): “Hasha lillah” (imperfection is far from God)! This is not a mortal; this but a noble angel!”
32. She said: “This is he about whom you blamed me, and indeed I sought to seduce him from his (pure) self, but he strongly abstained from committing sins, and (now) if he does not do what I bade him, he shall certainly be imprisoned, and he shall certainly be of those debased!”
33. He said: “O Lord! Prison is dearer to me than that to which they invite me, and if You do not turn their guile away from me, I may yield to them and become of the ignorant ones.”
34. His Lord, thereupon, heard (his prayer), and He turned their guile away from him. Verily He is the all-Hearing, the all-Knowing.
35. Then it occurred to them (even) after they had seen the signs (of his innocence), that they should imprison him for some time.
36. Two youths entered with him the prison. One of them said (to Joseph): “Verily I saw myself (in a vision) pressing wine.” The other said: “I saw myself (in a vision) carrying bread on my head and birds were eating thereof. Inform us of its interpretation. Verily we see you as one who does good deeds.”
37. He (Joseph) said: “There shall not come to you any food with which you are fed but I inform you both of its interpretation before it even reaches you. This is of what my Lord has taught me. Verily I have forsaken the religion of people who do not believe in God, and are disbelievers in the hereafter.
38. “And I follow the religion of my fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and it is not (lawful) for us to associate aught with God. This is by God’s Grace upon us and on mankind but most people do not give thanks.
39. “O my fellow inmates! Are (many) gods differing from each other better, or God, the One, the all-Dominant?
40. “You only worship besides Him (mere) names which you have named, you and your fathers. God has not sent down for them any authority; there is no judgment but God’s. He has bidden that you worship none but Him. This is the right religion, but most people do not know.
41. “O my fellow inmates! As to one of you, he will pour out wine for his lord to drink; as for the other, he shall be crucified, so much so that the birds shall eat from his head. The matter about which you two inquired is thus decreed.”
42. He said to him of the two whom he knew would be delivered: “Mention me to your lord.” But the devil caused him to forget mentioning him to his lord, so he remained in prison a few years.
43. The king said: “In truth, I saw (in a vision) seven fat kine devoured by seven lean ones, and seven green ears and others dry. O chiefs, explain to me (the meaning of) my dreams, if you can interpret a dream.”
44. They said: “Confused dreams (are these)! We do not know the interpretation of such (confused) dreams.”
45. One of the two who had been released remembered, even after a long time, and said: “I will expound to you its interpretation, so let me go (to the prison).”
46. “Joseph! O truthful one! Expound to us (the implication of) seven fat kine devoured by seven lean ones, and seven ears green and (seven) others dry, so that I may return to the people and they may know.”
47. He said: “You shall sow for seven years as usual, but you should leave that which you reap in its ears except a little, of which you eat.
48. “Then shall come after that seven years of hardship (famine), which shall eat away all that you laid by beforehand for them except a little of what you preserved.
49. “Then people after that will have abundant rain, and in having it they will press wine.”
50. The king said: “Bring him to me!” So when the messenger came to him, he (Joseph) said: “Go back to your lord and ask him what the matter with the women who cut their hands is; verily my Lord knows their guile.”
51. The king said (to the women): “What was the matter with you when you sought to seduce Joseph from his (pure) self?” The women said: “Hasha lillah (far from God is every imperfection); we do not know of any evil (charge) against him!” The wife of al-Aziz said: “Now the truth has become manifest. I sought to seduce him from his (pure) self, and verily he is a truthful one!”
52. Joseph said: “This inquiry I caused that he might know that I have not been unfaithful in his absence, and that God does not guide the guile of the unfaithful ones.
53. “I do not exculpate myself. Verily (one’s) self is wont to bid to evil except such as my Lord has had mercy on. Verily, my Lord is oft-Forgiving, all-Merciful.”
54. The king said: “Bring him to me. I will choose him for my own service.” So when he had spoken to him, he (king) said: “Verily you are henceforward in our own presence (honourably) accommodated, trusted!”
55. He said: “Set me (in authority) over the treasuries of the land; verily I am a (faithful) keeper, knowing well (its management).”
56. Thus did We establish Joseph in the land, to take possession therein as he pleased. We bestow Our mercy on whomsoever We will, and We do not waste the recompense of the doers of good.
57. Certainly the recompense of the hereafter is (much) better for those who believe and guard (themselves) against evil.
58. Joseph’s brothers came and they entered, and he knew them but they did not recognize him.
59. When he had furnished them with their provision, he said to them: “Bring me a brother of yours from your father; do not you see that I give full measure, and that I am the best of hosts?
60. “But if you do not bring him to me, then there shall be no measure for you with me, nor shall you (even) come near me.”
61. They said: “We will seek to get him from his father, and we shall certainly do so.”
62. He said to his servants: “Put their goods into their saddle-bags so that they may perceive it when they return to their family, perchance they might come back.”
63. So when they returned to their father, they said: “O our father! The measure is denied to us. So send with us our brother, so that we may get the measure, and we will certainly guard him (well).”
64. He said: “Can I trust him to you except as I entrusted his brother to you aforetime? But God is the Best Guard and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful ones.”
65. When they opened their belongings, they found their goods returned to them. They said: “O father! What (more) can we desire? Our goods have been returned to us, and we will bring more for our family and guard our brother, and we shall have in addition the measure of a camel (load)!
This is (only) an easy measure.”
66. (Jacob) said: “Never will I send him with you until you pledge a firm covenant in God’s name that you will most surely bring him back to me, unless you are completely surrounded.” When they pledged a covenant to him, he said: “(There is) God over all that we say, a Guardian-Witness.
67. He said: “O my sons! Do not enter through one gate, but rather enter through different gates, and I cannot avail you aught against God. The judgment is only God’s. On Him do I rely, and on Him (alone) let the reliants rely.”
68. When they had entered as they were bidden by their father, it did not avail them aught against (the decree of God); but (it was only) a desire in Jacob’s heart which he satisfied, and verily he was endowed with knowledge for We had taught him, though most people do not know.
69. When they entered unto Joseph, he lodged his brother (Benjamin) with himself (privately) and said: “I am your brother; therefore, do not grieve at what they do.”
70. When he had furnished them with their provisions, the drinking cup was placed in his brother’s saddlebag. Then a caller cried out: “O you of the caravan! Verily you are thieves!”
71. They said, while turning to them, “What is that which you miss?”
72. He said: “We miss the king’s drinking cup and whosoever brings it shall have a camel load, and I am in charge of it.”
73. They said: “By God! You know that we did not come to make mischief in the land, nor are we thieves.”
74. They said: “But what shall be the punishment for this, if you (are proven to) be liars?”
75. They said: “The punishment for it shall be that he in whose bag it is found shall himself be (held as bondman) in penalty for it. Thus do we punish the wrong-doers.”
76. Then he (Joseph) began (the search starting) with their sacks before that of his brother, then he drew it out of his brother’s sack. Thus did We plan for Joseph; it was not (lawful) that he should take his brother under the king’s law unless God willed it. We raise the degrees (of wisdom and knowledge) of whomsoever We will and above everyone endued with knowledge is the all-Knowing.
77. They said: “If he steals, indeed, a brother of his stole before.” But Joseph kept it a secret to himself, and he did not disclose it to them. He said: “You are in an evil condition, and God knows best what you allege.”
78. They said: “O al-Aziz! His father is very old; so, take one of us in his place. Verily we see you do good unto others.”
79. He said: “God protect us that we should seize (anyone) other than him with whom we found our property, for verily we would then be among the unjust ones.”
80. When they despaired of (moving) him, they retired whispering (to each other). The eldest among them said: “Do you not know how your father took a (firm) covenant from you in God’s name, and how you failed about Joseph aforetime? So, I will never leave this land until my father permits me or God decides for me; He is the best of judges.
81. “Return to your father and say: `O father! Verily your son committed theft; we bear no witness but to what we have known, and we could not guard against the unseen.
82. “And inquire in the town in which we were and the caravan with which we proceeded, and verily we are truthful.’”
83. He said: “Nay! You have contrived a (suitable) story for you; so (my course is) comely patience; maybe God will bring them to me all together; verily He is all-Knowing, all-Wise.”
84. He turned away from them and said: “Alas! My grief for Joseph!” And his eyes were whitened with grief, and he was a repressor (of grief).
85. They said: “By God! You will not cease to remember Joseph until you are (seriously) ill or (until) you perish.”
86. He said: “I only complain about my distress and grief to God, and I know from God what you do not.
87. “O my sons! Go and inquire about Joseph and his brother, and do not despair of God’s mercy. Verily, only the disbelieving people despair of God’s mercy.”
88. So they came unto him and said: “O al-Aziz! Distress has touched us and our family, and we have (now) come only with scanty capital; so, give us full measure and bestow charity on us. Verily God rewards the charitable ones.”
89. He said: “Do not you know what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant (of the consequences)?”
90. They said: “Are you indeed Joseph?!” He said: “Indeed I am Joseph, and this is my brother; in truth God has been gracious to us. Verily he who practices piety and is patient (is always rewarded), for verily God does not waste the reward of those who do good.”
91. They said: “By God! God has indeed favoured you over us, and we were certainly guilty.”
92. He said: “(There shall be) no reproof against you (from) this day (on); may God forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful (ones).
93. “Take my shirt and cast it on my father’s face and he shall thus recover his sight, and bring me all your family.”
94. When the caravan with Joseph’s shirt had left (Egypt), their father (even there in his place) said: “I feel the smell of Joseph, if you do not think that I dote.”
95. They said: “By God! Verily you are in your error.”
96. So when the bearer of glad tidings came, he cast it (the shirt) on his (Jacob’s) face, and (forthwith) eye-sight returned to him. He said: “Did I not tell you that I certainly know from God what you do not?”
97. They said: “O father! Ask forgiveness for our sins; verily, we are guilty.”
98. He said: “Soon will I ask forgiveness for you from my Lord: Verily He is the oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
99. When they entered in the presence of Joseph, he accommodated his parents with himself and said: “Enter Egypt, if God wills, (all of you) in security.”
100. He raised his parents to the throne, and they fell down to him prostrating. He said: “O father! This is the interpretation of my dream of aforetime! Indeed, my Lord has made it come true, and indeed He was kind to me when He took me out of the prison and brought you from the desert (into this town to me), after Satan had sown dissension between me and my brothers. Verily my Lord is Benign to whomsoever He wills. Verily, He is all-Knowing, all-Wise.
101. “O Lord! Indeed You have given me of the dominion and taught me the interpretation of events (visions). O Originator of the heavens and the earth! You (alone) are my guardian in this world and the hereafter; cause me to die a Muslim (submitting to You) and join me with the righteous.”
102. This is of the unseen which We reveal to you (O Our Messenger Muhammad), nor were you present with them when they resolved their affair, or when they were devising their plans.
103. Yet most people do not believe (it), though you desire it.
104. You do not ask of them a recompense for it; (it) is none other than an admonition to (all) the worlds (of creation).
105. How many a sign in the heavens and the earth whereby they pass and turn away therefrom?
106. Most of them do not believe in God except the polytheists.
107. Then do they feel secure when an overwhelming chastisement comes to them from God or (that) the hour suddenly comes to them while they are unaware?
108. Say (O Our Messenger Muhammad): “This is my way; I invite (all of you) with clear sight to God, (which) I and he that follows me (possess). Glory be to God, and I am not one of the polytheists.”
109. We did not send (messengers) before you but (they were) men to whom We revealed from (among) the people of the towns. Do they not travel in the land so that they may see what the end of those before them has been? Certainly the abode of the hereafter is the best for those who guard themselves (against evil). Do you not then understand?
110. Till when the messengers despaired and deemed that they were indeed belied, Our help came to them, and We delivered whomsoever We willed, and Our wrath is not warded off from the guilty people.
111. Indeed, in their stories is a lesson for men of understanding. It is not a tale which has been forged, but it is a confirmation of what went before, a detailed exposition of all things and a guide and mercy to people who believe.
