In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. Alif, Lam Ra’. (This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you so that you may bring people forth from utter darkness into light by their Lord’s permission, (and bring them) to the way of the Mighty, the Praised One,
2. God, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and in the earth, and woe unto the unbelievers on account of the severe chastisement,
3. Those who love this world’s life more than the hereafter and turn away from God’s path and desire to make it (look) crooked; these are in a great error.
4. We did not send any apostle but speaking the language of his people, so that he might explain to them clearly, then God makes whom He pleases err, and He guides whom He pleases, and He is the Mighty, the Wise.
5. Certainly We sent Moses with Our communications, saying: “Bring your people forth from utter darkness into the light and recount to them the days of God; most surely there are signs in this for every patient, grateful one.”
6. Moses said to his people: “Remember God’s favour unto you when He delivered you from Pharaoh’s people who subjected you to severe torment, slaying your sons and sparing your women, and in this there was a great trial from your Lord,
7. “And your Lord made it known: `If you are grateful, I will certainly grant you more, and if you are ungrateful, My chastisement is truly severe.’”
8. And Moses said: “If you, as well as all those on earth, are ungrateful, God most surely is self-Sufficient, Praised.”
9. Has not the account of those before you, the people of Noah, Ad and Thamud, and those after them, reached you? None knows them but God. Their apostles came to them with clear arguments, but they thrust their hands into their mouths and said: “Surely we deny that with which you are sent, and most surely we are in serious doubt regarding what you invite us to.”
10. Their apostles said: “Is there doubt about God, Maker of the heavens and the earth? He invites you to forgiveness of your sins and a respite till an appointed term.” They said: “You are no more than a mortal like us; you only wish to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. Bring
us, therefore, some clear proof.”
11. Their apostles said to them: “We are but mortals like you, yet God bestows His favours upon whomsoever He pleases of His servants, and it is not for us that we should bring you a proof except by God’s permission; and upon God (alone) should the believers rely.
12. “And what reason do we have that we should not rely on God? He has indeed guided us in our ways, and we would certainly bear patience with your persecution of us; and on God (alone) should those who seek reliance depend.”
13. Those who disbelieved said to their apostles: “We will most certainly drive you out of our land, or else you should come back into our religion.” So their Lord revealed to them: “We will most surely destroy those who are unjust,
14. “And most certainly We will settle you (apostles) in the land after them; this is for him who fears standing in My presence and who heeds My threat.”
15. And they asked for judgment and every obstinate transgressor was disappointed:
16. Beyond him is Hell, and he shall be given festering water to drink;
17. He shall drink it little by little and shall not be able to swallow it; and death will approach him from all sides; yet he shall not die but face a vehement torment:
18. The similitude of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their deeds are like ashes on which the wind blows hard, on a stormy day; they shall have no power over anything of what they have earned; this is the straying (from the Right Path).
19. Do not you see that God created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He so wills, He can take you away and bring (in your place) a new creation.
20. And this is not difficult for God at all.
21. And they shall come forth before God altogether, then the weak shall say to those who were haughty: “Verily we were your followers, so can you avert any part of the chastisement of God from us?” They will say: “Had God guided us, we too would surely have guided you. It is the same to us (now) whether we implore impatiently or we are patient; there is no way to escape.”
22. Satan shall say after the affair is decided: “Verily God promised you the promise of truth, and I gave you promises but failed to keep them; and I had no authority over you except I called you and you responded to me; so, do not blame me but (rather) blame your own selves. I cannot be your helper (now), nor can you be mine. Verily I disbelieved in your making me a partner with God from before. Surely for the unjust ones there is a painful chastisement.”
23. Those who believe and do good deeds will be admitted into gardens beneath which rivers flow to abide therein by their Lord’s permission; their greeting therein will be: “Salam! (peace).”
24. Do not you see how God sets forth a comparison of a goodly word (being) like a goodly tree whose root is firmly fixed and whose branches (stretch up) into the sky,
25. Yielding its fruit in every season by its Lord’s permission. And God sets forth comparisons (like this) for people so that they may reflect.
26. The similitude of an evil word is like an evil tree whose roots lie on the surface of the earth; it has no stability.
27. God strengthens those who believe with the confirmed words in the life of this world and in the hereafter, and God leaves the unjust ones to stray; God does what He pleases.
28. Have you seen those who have changed God’s bounties by ingratitude, and caused their people to halt in the abode of perdition?
29. Hell! They shall enter into it; and an evil place (it is) to stay in!
30. And they set up (idols as) equals to God that they might lead people astray from His path. Say: “Enjoy (your pleasures for a while), for your return is to the Fire.”
31. Tell My servants who believe in Me that they should establish prayer and spend (charity) secretly and openly out of what We have given them before the day comes when no bargaining nor befriending shall take place.
32. God is He Who created the heavens and the earth, and sent down water from the heavens, then brought forth fruit therewith as sustenance for you; and made the ships usable to you that you may sail in the sea by His command, and subjected the rivers to you.
33. He has made the sun and the moon pursuing their (respective) courses; and He has made the night and subjected the day to you,
34. And He gives you of everything that you ask Him, and if you (try to) compute God’s bounties, you will not be able to do so; indeed man is very unjust, ungrateful.
35. Abraham said: “Lord! Make this city secure, and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols,
36. “Lord! Verily they have led many people astray; so, whosoever follows me is surely of me, and whosoever disobeys me, then verily You are the oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
37. “Lord! Indeed I have housed a part of my offspring in a barren valley near Your Sacred House, O Lord, that they may establish prayer; therefore, make the hearts of some people yearn to them, and provide them with fruits that they may be grateful.
38. “Lord! Verily You know what we hide and what we openly declare, nothing in the earth nor in the heavens is hidden from God.
39. “To God, Who has granted me Ishmael and Isaac in my old age, belongs all praise. O Lord! Accept the supplication!
40. My Lord! make me keep up prayer and from my offspring (too), O our Lord, and accept my prayer:
41. “O Lord! Forgive me and my parents and the believers on the day when the reckoning shall be set up!”
42. Do not think God to be heedless of what the unjust ones do. He only gives them a respite to a day when eyes shall be fixed open (in terror),
43. (As they come) running on with horror, their heads upraised, their glance not returning to them, and their hearts blank.
44. And warn people of the day when chastisement comes to them. It is then that those who did injustice will say: “O Lord! Grant us a respite for a yet short term so that we may respond to Your call and follow the messengers.” Did you not used to swear aforetime that there would be no extinction for you?
45. And you dwelt in the abodes of those who did injustice to their own selves, and it was made clear to you how We dealt with them, and We set forth parables for you.
46. And indeed they devised their plots, but all their plots were within the view of God, even if their plot had been such (a powerful one) as to move mountains thereby.
47. And do not think that God will fail His messengers in His promise; verily God is Mighty, Lord of Retribution.
48. On the day when the earth changes into a different earth, and (so will) the heavens too, and all men shall be marshaled forth to God, the One, the Vanquisher,
49. And you will see the guilty (ones) on that day bound together in chains;
50. Their garments (shall be) of pitch and their faces covered with fire,
51. So that God may recompense each soul according to what it earned; verily God is swift in reckoning.
52. This is a clear message for mankind, so that they may be warned thereby, so that they may know that He is the One God, and that men of understanding may take heed.
