In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. Ha, Meem.
2. By the manifesting Book (Qur’an),
3. Verily We revealed it on a blessed night-indeed, We have ever been warning-
4. Therein, all wise affairs are made distinct,
5. (Becoming) a command from Us; surely We send (revelations),
6. As a mercy from your Lord; He is the all-Hearing, the all-Knowing.
7. Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them twain, if you are sure of faith.
8. There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore.
9. Yet they are sporting in doubt.
10. So await the day when the heaven gives out a smoke clearly visible,
11. Enveloping the people; this will be a painful chastisement.
12. - “O Lord! Remove from us the torment; we are (now) truly believers.”
13. How shall they be admonished when a messenger came to them making the truth manifest?
14. (Yet) they turned their backs to him and said: “He is tutored (by others), mad.”
15. Verily We will remove the torment a little; you will surely return (to evil).
16. That day We shall seize them with a great seizure; We shall certainly afflict retribution upon them.
17. And indeed We tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A noble messenger came to them-
18. Saying: “Deliver to me the servants of God; verily I am a trusted messenger to you,
19. “And do not exalt yourselves against God; I come to you with a manifest authority.
20. “And I take refuge with my Lord and yours lest you should stone me;
21. “And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone.”
22. (But they tormented him); then he cried unto his Lord: “These are a guilty people.”
23. - “Then march forth with My servants by night; you will surely be pursued,
24. “And leave the sea calm; they are certainly a host that shall be drowned.”
25. How many have they left of gardens and fountains!
26. Cornfields and dwellings noble!
27. And pleasant things in which they delighted!
28. So was it: and We gave them all as a heritage to another people;
29. So neither the heavens nor the earth wept over them, nor were they respited.
30. And indeed We delivered the children of Israel from the degrading affliction,
31. From Pharaoh; he surely was haughty, extravagant.
32. And indeed We chose them, with prescience, above all other creation;
33. And We gave them the signs wherein was a clear trial.
34. These do say:
35. “There is naught save our first death, and we shall not be raised again.
36. “Then bring our fathers back, if you are truthful.”
37. Are they better or the people of Tubba’, and those before them? We destroyed them, for verily they were guilty.
38. And We did not create the heavens nor the earth and what is between them both in sport.
39. We created them but with the truth, yet most of them do not know.
40. The day of sporting is the appointed term for all of them,
41. The day when a friend shall not avail his friend aught, nor shall they be helped,
42. Save those on whom God shall have mercy; verily He is the Almighty, the all-Merciful.
43. Verily the tree of Zaqqum,
44. Shall be the food of the sinful,
45. Like molten brass; it shall boil in their bellies.
46. Like the boiling of scalding water.
47. - “Seize him, then drag him down into the midst of Hell,
48. “Then pour on his head of the torment of the boiling water.”
49. “Taste it! You were forsooth the Mighty, the Honourable;
50. “Verily, this is what you used to dispute.”
51. The pious will be in a place secure,
52. In gardens and springs,
53. Attired in fine silk and rich brocade, facing each other;
54. So shall it be, and We will unite them with fair ones, large, lustrous, lovely eyes.
55. They shall call therein for every kind of fruit, being in peace and security;
56. They shall taste no death therein save the first death, and He will save them from the chastisement of Hell.
57. A grace from your Lord; this is the great achievement.
58. So We have made it (Qur’an) easy in your own tongue so that they may be admonished.
59. So wait, therefore, verily they, too, are waiting.
