In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. O you who believe! Be not forward in the presence of God and His messenger and fear God; verily God is all-Hearing, all-Knowing.
2. O you who believe! Do not raise your voice above the Prophet’s voice, do not speak loudly to him as you speak to one another lest your deeds should become null while you do not perceive.
3. Verily those who lower their voices in the presence of the messenger of God are the ones whose hearts God has tested for piety; theirs shall be forgiveness and a great reward.
4. Verily most of those who call out to you (O Muhammad) from outside the private chambers do not understand.
5. If they wait patiently till you come out to them, it would certainly be better for them, and verily God is oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
6. O you who believe! If a wicked man comes to you with some news, ascertain it carefully lest you harm some people in ignorance and then you repent for what you have done.
7. And know that the messenger of God is in your midst; should he obey you in many matters, you would certainly be in distress, but God has endeared faith to you and made it attractive in your hearts and made disbelief and transgression abhorrent to you; these are they who are on the Right Guidance,
8. By grace from God and as a bounty; God is all-Knowing, all-Wise.
9. If two parties of the believers fall into an armed dispute, restore peace between them both; but if one of the two parties transgresses against the other, then you shall fight the one that transgresses till it complies with the Command of God; if it complies, then restore peace between the two parties with justice, and act justly; verily God loves the just ones.
10. The believers are brethren; so, make peace among the brethren and fear God that you may be blessed with mercy.
11. O you who believe! Let not some people laugh at other people who may be better than them, nor let women laugh at other women who haply may be better than the latter; find no fault with your own selves nor call one another by (bad) nicknames; evil is a bad name after his accepting the faith; whoso does not repent such conduct are surely the unjust ones.
12. O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, for verily suspicion in some cases is a sin, and do not spy. Do not let some of you backbite others; does any of you like the eating of the flesh of his dead brother? You would surely abhor it, and fear God; verily God is oft-Returning, Most Merciful.
13. O people! Verily We have created you of a male and a female, and made you nations and tribes so that you may recognize each other; verily the most honoured among you in the sight of God is the most pious; verily God is all-Knowing, all-Aware.
14. The desert Arabs say: “We believe;” say: “You did not believe,” but say: “We submit,” for faith has not yet entered your hearts; and if you obey God and His messenger, He will not belittle any of your deeds; verily God is oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
15. The believers are those who believe in God and His messenger; they do not doubt thereafter, and they strive with their wealth and lives in the way of God; they are the truthful ones.
16. Say: “Do you instruct God about your religion? While God knows everything in the heavens and the earth, and God knows all things?”
17. They impress on you as a favour that they have submitted (to God in Islam); say: “Lay no obligation upon me by your submission; rather, God lays an obligation upon you that He guided you to faith, if you are truthful.
18. “Verily God knows the unseen in the heavens and the earth, and God sees all that you do.”
