In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. Everything in the heavens and the earth celebrates the praise of God; He is the ever-Prevalent, the all-Wise.
2. His is the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth; He grants life and causes death, and He has power over all things.
3. He is the first and the last, the manifest and the hidden; He is the Knower of all things.
4. He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six days (periods), then He firmly established Himself over the Throne; He knows whatever enters the earth and whatever goes forth from it, and whatever descends from the heavens and whatever goes up into it; He is with you wherever you may be; God is the Seer of whatever you do.
5. His is the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and to God (alone) are all affairs returned.
6. He causes the night to enter upon the day, and causes the day to enter upon the night, and He is the Knower of whatever in the hearts.
7. So believe in God and His Messenger (Muhammad) and spend (in charity) of what He has made you successors thereof; for whosoever among you believes and spends (charitably), for them is a great recompense.
8. What reason do you have that you do not believe in God, while the Messenger invites you to believe in your Lord and has indeed taken a covenant from you if you are believers?
9. He it is Who sends His servant manifest signs so that He may bring you out of the darkness (of infidelity) into the light (of faith); verily God is the Most Kind and Merciful unto you.
10. And what reasons do you have that you do not spend in the Way of God, while God’s is the heritage of the heavens and the earth? Alike are not among you those who spend before the victory and fought, and those who are more exalted in rank than those who spent and fought afterwards; to all has God promised goodness; verily God is all-Aware of whatever you do.
11. Who is he who would loan God a goodly loan? So that He may double it for him, and for him shall be a noble recompense.
12. The Day you see the faithful men and women with their light running before them, and on their right hand (shall be given) glad tidings for you of that Day: gardens beneath which rivers flow to abide therein; that is the great achievement.
13. On that Day, the hypocritical men and women will say to those who believe: “Tarry for us so that we may borrow some of your own light.” It shall be said to them: “Turn back and seek light!” So there will be a wall set between them with a door therein; there shall be mercy therein, and the outside shall have the chastisement.
14. They will cry out to them: “Were we not with you?” They shall answer: “Yea! But you cast yourselves into temptation, and you waited (for us to be beguiled) and you doubted (God’s warning), and your own vain desires deceived you about God’s decree, and the Deceiver deceived you about God.”
15. So, this Day no ransom shall be accepted from those who disbelieved. Your abode shall be the Fire; it is your guardian, and what a wretched resort it shall be!
16. Has not time come yet for those who believe that their hearts become humble for the remembrance of God and for what has been revealed of the truth? They should not be like those who were given the book before, but when ages passed over them, it only hardened their hearts, and many of them are transgressors.
17. Know that God enlivens the earth after its death; indeed We have made the signs clear to you that you may understand.
18. Verily charitable men and women, and those who offer a goodly loan to God, it shall be doubled for them, and a noble reward shall be theirs.
19. Those who believe in God and His Messenger are the truthful, and the witnesses with their Lord; for them shall be their recompense and their light; those who disbelieve and falsify Our signs are the inmates of Hell.
20. Know that the life of this world is only sport, play, and boasting, and the lustful are vying in the multiplying of wealth and children, like rain therewith vegetation springs up, pleasing the tillers; then it withers away, and you see it becoming yellow; then it becomes stubble, crumbling down, and in the hereafter is a severe chastisement and (also) forgiveness from God and (His) pleasure; the life of this world is but means of illusion.
21. Vie in hastening to forgiveness from your Lord and to a garden whose extent is like that of the heavens and the earth (combined) prepared for those who believe in God and His messengers; that is the grace of God; He bestows it upon whomsoever He pleases; God is the Lord of Mighty Grace.
22. No disaster befalls the earth save it is in a Book before We cause it to be; verily that is easy for God,
23. Lest you should distress yourselves for what escapes you, and be over-joyous for what He has granted you; God does not love any arrogant boaster,
24. Those who are niggardly and enjoin upon people niggardliness; and whosoever turns away (from charity), then verily God is He Who is self-Sufficient, Most Praise-worthy.
25. Indeed We sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and We sent down with them the Book and the Scale that people might establish themselves in justice; We sent down iron wherein is latent mighty power and also benefits for mankind, and that God may test who it is that will help Him and His messengers in secret; verily God is the Almighty, the ever- Prevalent.
26. Indeed We sent Noah and Abraham, and We endowed upon their seed the prophethood and the Book, so among them are some who are rightly guided, and most of them are transgressors.
27. Then We made Our messengers follow in their footsteps, and We sent after them Jesus son of Mary, and We gave him the Evangel and put into the hearts of those who followed him kindness and compassion; but (as to) the monastic life, they invented it themselves. We never prescribed it upon them save seeking the pleasure of God, and this they did not observe as they should have been, and We gave those of them who believed their due recompense; but many of them are transgressors.
28. O you who believe! Fear God and believe in His Messenger; He will give you two-fold of His mercy. He will appoint you a light wherein you shall walk, and He will forgive you; God is oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
29. So that the people of the Book may know that they control naught of the grace of God, and that God’s grace is in His Hand; He bestows it upon whomsoever He pleases; God is the Lord of Mighty Grace.
