In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. O Our Prophet! Why do you forbid that which God has made permissible to you? Do you seek to please your wives? (Yet) God is oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.
2. Indeed God has made lawful for you the dissolution of your oaths, and God (alone) is your Lord; He is the all-Knowing, the all-Wise.
3. When the Prophet confided to one of his wives regarding a matter, she divulged it (to others) and God apprised him thereof. He made known a part of it and repudiated another; so when he informed her of it, she asked: “Who has informed you of this?” He said: “The all-Knowing, the all-Aware has informed me.”
4. If you both turn (in repentance) to Him, then indeed your hearts are inclined (to this), but if you two support each other against him, then verily God is his Protector, and so is Gabriel, and (most) virtuous ones among the believers, and the angels thereafter will support him.
5. Haply his Lord, if he divorces you, will give him in your place better wives than you, Muslims, mu’mins, devout, repentant, worshippers of God, travellers (for faith), observers of fast, widows and virgins.
6. O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from the Fire whose fuel shall be men and stones, over which angels shall be stern and strong; they do not disobey God in what He commands them, and only act as they are bidden.
7. (The angels will say): “O you who disbelieve! Make no excuses this Day; you shall be recompensed just as you used to do.”
8. O you who believe! Turn (in repentance) to God with a turning of sincere penitence, haply your Lord will wipe out your sins from you and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow. On the Day, God will not abase the Prophet nor those who believe with him. Their light will run before them, and on their right hand they shall say (in prayers): “Lord! Perfect our light for us, and grant us forgiveness. Verily You have power over all things.”
9. O Our Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and hypocrites, and be firm with them. Their abode is Hell, and what an evil destination!
10. God sets forth, as a similitude to those who disbelieve, the wife of Noah, and the wife of Lot. Both were under two of Our righteous servants, but they were unfaithful (to their husbands), and they (husbands) availed them naught against God. It was said (to them): “Enter, both of you, into the Fire along with those who enter.”
11. God sets forth the similitude to those who believe the wife of Pharaoh. She said: “Lord! Build me a house in Paradise and deliver me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and deliver me from the unjust people.”
12. And Mary the daughter of Imran (Amram) who guarded her chastity. We breathed into it (her body) of Our spirit, and she testified to the truth of the words of her Lord and His scriptures, and she was among the obedient ones.
