  • Arrival of Jabir in Karbala

Shaykh Tusi writes in his book entitled Misbah ul Mutahajjid that 20th of the month of Safar is the day on which Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari a companion of the Holy Prophet came from Medina to Karbala to pay homage to the sacred grave of Imam Hussain and he was the first person who performed homage to the grave of the Imam.
Homage of Imam Hussain on that day is recommended and it is this very homage that is called Ziyuratul Arba'in. Shaykh Tusi appears to say that Jabir left Medina with the object of paying homage to the sacred grave of Imam Hussain and arrived at Karbala on the 20th day of Safar and not that he reached Karbala after forty days of the martyrdom of the Imam by chance.
It is not unlikely that it was so, because after the arrival of Ahlul Bayt in Kufa Ibn Ziyad immediately dispatched Abdul-Malik ibn al-Harith Salami from Iraq to the Hijaz so that he might arrive in Medina as early as possible and inform Amr bin Sa'id bin A-S Amavi, the Governor of Medina, about the martyrdom of the Imam and his companions and Abdul Malik proceeded to Medina at once, reached there after a few days, and formally conveyed the news of the martyrdom of the Imam to the governor.
In that case it is possible that on hearing about the tragedy of the martyrdom of the Imam and Bani Hashim and the companions of the Imam, Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari, who according to some narration had lost both of his eyes by that time, might have departed from Medina with the intention of paying homage to the graves of Imam Hussain and his devoted friends, who bravely met martyrdom, and might have arrived in Karbala on the 20th of safar i.e. that is exactly forty days after the martyrdom of the Imam and the tradition of the Ziyartal Arba'in of the Imam was commenced by him.

  • Disbelievers better than Enemies of Ahlul Bayt (A.S)

    Hypocrite

Narrated Mohammad bin Yahya, from Ahmad bin Mohammad bin Isa, from al-Hussein bin Saeed, from Fazalah bin Ayub, from Saif bin Amirah, from Abi Bakr al-Hazrami who said:

I asked Imam Sadiq (A.S), "Are the people of Shaam (Damascus) more evil or the [people of] Rome?
Imam Sadiq (A.S) said: "Verily the people of Rome disbelieved but do not have enmity with Us. While the people of Shaam (Damascus) disbelieved and had enmity with us."

Check out the verses of the Quran, Chapter. 5, Verse. 58 to 61 - These verses prove that the hypocrites (who claim to be Muslims but don't believe from their heart) are worse than the Jews and Christians who oppose Islam and Muslims.

  • Selection of Spouse

The school of Ahlulbayt (A.S) has not left us to follow our whims and fancies. We have been taught the best method of selecting a suitable spouse. The most important criterion is piety or religiousness.

    A. Religiousness
The author of Youth and Spouse Selection says, “The person who does not have religion, does not have anything.” [Youth and Spouse Selection, Ali Akbar Mazaheri]
When a man came to the Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) to seek guidance for selecting a spouse, he (P.B.U.H&H.P) said, “It is binding upon you to have a religious spouse.” [Wasa’il ul-Shi’a, Vol. 14, p. 30]
Knowing the human weakness for beauty and wealth, the Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H&H.P) has forewarned, “A man who marries a woman for the sake of her wealth, Allah leaves him in his own condition, and one who marries her (only) for her beauty, will find in her (things) which he dislikes (unpleasing manners) and Allah will gather up all these things for one who marries her for the sake of her faith (religiousness).” [Wasa’il ul-Shi’a, Vol. 14, p. 31]

    B. Good Nature
The next important criterion is good nature.
Imam Reza (A.S) wrote in reply to a person who had asked him if it was advisable to marry his daughter to a person known for his ill nature, “If he is ill-natured (bad tempered), don’t marry your daughter to him.” [Youth and Spouse Selection, Ali Akbar Mazaheri, p. 151]
The same will apply where the bride-to-be lacks a good nature. Such a woman, though she may be beautiful and rich, would make the life of her husband miserable. She can never be patient in the difficulties that arise in married life.

    C. Compatibility
The Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) gave no recognition to class distinction, but in marriage, he stressed upon compatibility. The marrying partners must be compatible to each other, so that there are no unnecessary misgivings later [Youth and Spouse Selection, Ali Akbar Mazaheri, p. 34]. It is better for a religious woman who is committed to laws and principles to marry a man like herself.
A man questioned the Prophet of Islam (P.B.U.H&H.P), “Whom must we marry?”
    He replied, “The suitable (matches).”
    “Who are the suitable matches?”
The Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) responded, “Some of the faithful are match for others.” [Youth and Spouse Selection, Ali Akbar Mazaheri, p. 175]
Imam Sadiq (A.S) said, “An intelligent and wise woman must not be matched except with a sage and wise man.” [Youth and Spouse Selection, Ali Akbar Mazaheri, p. 178]

    D. Decent Family
The Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H&H.P) has given great emphasis on taking into consideration a good family background when we intend to marry.
He said, “Marry in the lap of a decent family, since the semen and the genes have effect.” [Makaremul Akhlaq]
The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) also said, “Look very carefully and minutely as to where you are placing your child because genes and hereditary qualities are transferred in a concealed and unintentional way and have their effect.” [Youth and Spouse Selection, Ali Akbar Mazaheri, p. 154]

    E. Reason
The Commander of the Faithful Ali (A.S) strongly forbade marrying a foolish and insane person. “Avoid marrying a stupid woman, since her company is a woe (distress) and her children too get wasted.” [Wasa’il ul-Shi’a, Vol. 14, p. 56]

    F. Physical and Mental Health
Though religiousness and piety are most important, it does not mean that we totally disregard the physical appearance and beauty of the prospective spouse.
The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) says, “When one intends to marry a woman, he should ask about her hair, just as he asks about her face (beauty), since the hair is one of the two beauties (of women).” [Biharul Anwar, Vol. 103, p. 237]

  • The types and Advantages of Water

A reliable tradition states that in this world and the world-to-come, there is nothing better than water. Anyone who takes pleasure in drinking water will take pleasure when God gives him the wine of Heaven.
According to a tradition from Imam Ali (A.S), "Zam Zam water is the best water among all the waters of the earth and Burhoot water (which is in Yemen) is the worst for it is haunted by the spirits of the nonbelievers, and day and night it is in a state of curse."
According to Imam Sadiq (A.S): "Zam Zam water is a cure for all diseases."
Imam Ali (A.S) said: "one should drink rain water as it purifies the body and cures all pains and diseases."
According to Imam Sadiq (A.S): "cold water lessens temperature, cures vomiting, digests food, and is an antidote for heat and also stated that boiled water is good for all types of pains and is not harmful in any way."
According to Imam Reza (A.S): "the water which is boiled seven times in seven different vessels cures fever and cough."
Ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur, a doctor, states that when he visited Imam Kazim (A.S), he saw him drinking a lot of water. When he stopped, the Imam (A.S) replied: "drinking water even in excess is not harmful in any way as it digests food in the stomach, lessens excitement (anger), increases intellect and cures vomiting."

    Manners of Drinking Water
According to Imam Sadiq (A.S), "whosoever, while drinking water, remembers Imam Hussein (A.S) and his Ahlul Bait and curses his murderers and tormenters, one lakh good deeds will be written in his record, one lakh sins will be forgiven, he will be elevated one lakh times and he will be rewarded to the extent as though he has freed one lakh slaves in the name of God and on the Day of Judgement God will look towards his welfare. If he recites the following while drinking water, it is better:
‘May Allah shower his blessings on Hussein (A.S) and his Ahlul bait and his companions. May He increase His curses on the murderers of Hussein (A.S) and his enemies.’
Another reliable tradition from the same Imam (A.S) asserts that if a person does not drink water when he is feeling thirsty and appeases his thirst late, then God makes him an inhabitant of Heaven.
Actually, before appeasing his thirst, he should wait for a while praising Almighty and then drink and at that time God makes Heaven compulsory for him.
In another tradition from the same Imam (A.S), it is stated that if a person, before drinking water at night recites three times:
‘Salutation to the water of Zam Zam and water of Furat.’
Then the water will not harm him.
According to a tradition from Imam Sadiq (A.S), "one should not have water while standing, one should not walk around a grave and should not urinate in standing water. If a person does these things, he will be affected by troubles and then he will have to cure himself alone from these."
According to Imam Baqir (A.S), "one should say ‘In the Name of God (Bismillah)’ before drinking water and ‘Alhamdulillah’ after drinking. If the clay container has a handle, then one should take the water from the front and if it is broken from somewhere or has a hole, then one should have water from the other side as both the situations are related to the devil."
The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) has prohibited blowing with mouth in the water.
It is stated that the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) used to drink water in glass utensils which had come as a present from Syria and at times in wooden and leather containers and if none were available, in his hand.
