In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. Alif, Lam, Ra. (This is) a Book whose verses are firmly arranged (together) then separated (in revelation), from the all-Wise, the all-Aware.
2. That you should not worship (anyone) but God; verily I am a warner for you from Him, and a bearer of glad tidings;
3. And (to preach to you): “Seek the forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him repentant; He will provide you with a goodly provision to an appointed term, and bestow His grace upon everyone of merit; if you turn back, then verily I fear for you the torment of a great day.
4. “Unto God is your return, and He has power over all things.”
5. Behold! They fold up their hearts that they may conceal (their infidelity) from Him. Behold! When they put their garments as a covering, He knows (all) that they conceal, and all that they reveal; verily He knows (the inmost secrets) of the hearts.
6. There is no moving creature on earth but on God is its sustenance, and He knows its resting-place and its repository; all is in the manifest Book.
7. It is He Who created the heavens and the earth in six days-and His Throne was on the water-that He might try you, which of you is best in conduct, and if you (O Our Messenger Muhammad) say: “You shall surely be raised up after death,” surely will those who disbelieve say: “This is (nothing) but open sorcery.”
8. If We hold back from them the torment until a reckoned time, they will surely say: “What holds it back?” Beware! On the day it comes to them, it shall not be turned away from them, and that which they used to scoff at will encircle them.
9. If We make man taste mercy from Us, (and) then take it from him; verily he is despairing, ungrateful.
10. If We make him taste (Our) favours after distress has afflicted him, he will surely say: “The evils have (all) gone away from me.” Indeed he is joyous, boastful,
11. Except those who forbear and do good deeds; for these there is forgiveness and a great recompense.
12. So perchance you may (be inclined) to give up a part of what is revealed to you, and your breast becomes straitened by it lest they should say: “Why has a treasure not been sent down to him or an angel come with him?” You are but a warner, and God is the Custodian over all things.
13. Or do they say that he has forged it? Say: “Bring then ten surahs like it forged, and call (to your aid) whomsoever you can besides God, if you are truthful.”
14. If they do not answer you, know then that this (Qur’an) is revealed (only) by God’s knowledge, and that there is no god but He! Will you then submit?
15. We shall pay whosoever desires the life and pomp of this world (the recompense for) their deeds therein; they shall suffer no loss.
16. These are they for whom there is nothing in the hereafter but the Fire, and vain shall be all that they wrought in it, and vain shall be all what they were doing.
17. Can they be like the one who has a clear proof from his Lord and a witness follows him from Him, and he is preceded by the Book of Moses, a guide and a mercy (testifying to it)? These believe in it, and whosoever of the parties (of idolaters) disbelieves in it, the Fire is the promised place; so, do not be in doubt about it; verily it is the truth from your Lord; but most people do not believe.
18. Who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against God? These shall be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses shall say: “These are those who lied against their Lord.” Now verily the curse of God is on the unjust.
19. Those who hinder (others) from the path of God and seek to make it (look) crooked, disbelieving in the hereafter,
20. These shall in no way frustrate (God’s design) on earth, nor shall there be any protecting friends for them besides God. The torment shall be doubled for them; they could not bear to hear, nor could they see.
21. These are they who have lost their lives, and what they invented in their minds have deserted them.
22. They are the very ones who in the Hereafter will surely be the greatest losers.
23. Those who believe and do good deeds, humbling themselves before their Lord, are the dwellers of Paradise, they will (forever) abide therein.
24. The two parties are like the blind and the deaf, and those with sight and with hearing. Are the two equal in their likeness? Will you not then take heed?
25. Indeed We sent Noah to his people (and he said to them): “I am a clear warner for you,
26. “That you shall not worship (anyone) but God; verily I fear for you the chastisement of a painful day.”
27. Then the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: “We only see in you a man like ourselves, and we do not see that any has followed you except those who are the lowest (in social status) of us (those who act) on first impressions; nor do we see in you any excellence over us; nay, we deem you liars.”
28. He said: “O my people! Do you think that if I have with me clear proof from my Lord, and He has bestowed on me mercy from Himself, that it has been made obscure to you (through your ignorance) that we shall compel you to (accept) it even though you are averse to it?
29. “And, O my people! I do not ask of you any wealth in return for it; my reward is exclusively with God, and I shall not drive away those who believe; verily, they shall meet their Lord. But I see you a people (who act) ignorantly.
30. “And, o my people! Who will help me against God if I drive them away? Will you not then take heed?
31. “I do not say to you that with me are the treasures of God, and I do not know the unseen, nor do I say that I am an angel, and I do not say about those whom your eyes hold in contempt that God will never bestow on them any good. God knows best what is in their hearts, for verily then I
should be among the unjust.”
32. They said: “O Noah! Indeed you have disputed with us and you have prolonged the dispute with us, now bring us what you have threatened us with, if you are among the truthful.”
33. He said: “Indeed, God will bring it to you only if He wills, and by no means shall you prevail against Him.
34. “My good advice will not avail you, if I intend to give you good advice, if God wills that He should leave you to stray. He is your Lord, and to Him shall you be returned.”
35. Or they say: “He (Muhammad) has forged it (Qur’an).” Say: “If I have forged it, my guilt shall fall on me, and I am free of your guilt.”
36. It was revealed to Noah that “Never will any of your people believe except those who have already believed; therefore, do not grieve for what they do.
37. “And make an ark under Our eyes and revelation, and do not plead with Me about the unjust; verily they shall be drowned.”
38. He began making the ark, and whenever the chiefs of his people passed by him, they mocked at him. He said: “If you mock at us, verily we too shall mock at you, even as you mock at us.
39. “Soon shall you know on whom a torment which will disgrace him descends, and upon whom (ultimately) a lasting torment falls.”
40. When Our command came, and water gushed forth out of the oven, We said: “Carry (O Noah) into it a pair, a male and a female, of each kind, and your family, except those on whom the sentence has already been passed, and those who believe.” There were only a few who believed with him.
41. He (Noah) said: “Embark upon it. In the name of God its sailing and its anchorage shall be! My Lord is oft-Forgiving, most Merciful.”
42. It (ark) moved on with them amid waves (towering) like mountains, and Noah called out to his son, who was aloof: “O my son! Embark with us and do not be with the disbelievers.”
43. He said: “I will betake myself to a mountain that shall secure me from the water.” He (Noah) said: “There is no protector today from God’s decree but he (of whom) He has mercy,” and a wave passed between them, so he was among the drowned.
44. It was said: “O earth! Swallow down your water, and O sky! Withhold (your rain);” the water abated, and the decree was fulfilled, and it rested on (Mount) al-Judi, and it was said: “Away with the unjust people!”
45. Noah cried to his Lord and said: “Lord! My son is of my family, and verily Your promise is true, and You are the most just of judges.”
46. He said: “O Noah! Indeed, he is not of your family; his conduct is not righteous; therefore, do not seek of Me that of which you have no knowledge; verily I admonish you lest you should be of the ignorant.”
47. He said: “O Lord! I seek refuge in You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. Unless You forgive me and have mercy on me, I shall be of the losers.”
48. It was said: “O Noah! Debark with peace from Us and blessings on you and on the people that will spring from those with you, and there shall be (other) people whom We shall afford provisions, then a painful torment shall afflict them from Us.”
49. These are (some) of the tidings of the unseen which We reveal to you (O Our Messenger Muhammad); you did not know them yourself nor your people before. Be, therefore, patient; verily the end is (only) for the pious ones.
50. To (the people of) Ad (We sent) their brother Hud. He said: “O my people! Worship (the only) God, you have no god other than He; you are but forgerers.
51. “O my people! I do not ask you any recompense for it; my recompense is only with Him Who created me. Do you not then understand?
52. “And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord and turn repentant unto Him; He sends clouds on you pouring down abundant rain, and He adds strength to your strength. Do not turn back as guilty ones.”
53. They said: “O Hud! You have not brought us any clear sign (of your truthfulness) and we will not desert our gods on account of your words, nor are we believers in you!
54. “We say nothing but that some of our gods have smitten you with evil.” He said: “I call God to witness, and you also witness that I am clear of what you associate-
55. “Besides Him, and then conspire against me, all of you, and give no respite.
56. “Indeed I rely on God, my Lord and your Lord; there is no living creature but that He holds it (in His control) by its forelock; verily my Lord is on the Right Path.
57. “But if you turn back, then indeed I have conveyed to you that which I have been sent, and my Lord will make people other than you succeed you, and you cannot do harm to Him in any way at all; verily my Lord is the (ever) protecting (over all things).”
58. When Our decree came to pass, We delivered Hud and those who believed with him by a mercy from Us, and We delivered them from a (very) severe torment.
59. This was (the people) of Hud; they denied the signs of their Lord and disobeyed His messengers, and followed the bidding of every insolent tyrant.
60. They were followed in this world by a curse, and on the Day of Resurrection too. Behold! Verily (the people of Ad) disbelieved in their Lord. Away with the people of Hud.
61. To the (people of) Thamud We sent their brother Salih. He said: “O my people! Worship (none but the only) God. You have no god other than He; He raised you from the earth and has given you to flourish therein; therefore, ask forgiveness of Him, then turn repentant to Him. Indeed my Lord is (ever) nigh.”
62. They said: “O Salih! Indeed you were amongst us in whom (our) hopes were centered before this. Do you (now) forbid us from worshipping what our fathers worshipped? We are in a disquieting doubt about that to which you call us.”
63. He said: “O my people! Do you not see if I am on a clear guidance from my Lord and He has granted me mercy from Himself: who would help me against God had I disobeyed Him? Indeed you would then increase my lot nothing but loss.
64. “O my people! This is God’s she-camel for you a sign (of my truthfulness); therefore, leave her to (freely) pasture on God’s earth and do not touch her with any harm, for then a ready torment will overtake you.”
65. Yet they hamstrung her. Then he said: “Enjoy (yourselves) in your abode for three days; that is a promise not to be belied.”
66. When Our decree came (to pass), We delivered Salih and those who believed with him by mercy from Us, and (We delivered them) from the ignominy of that day; verily your Lord is the all-Strong, the Almighty.
67. The (mighty) blast seized those who were unjust, so they became in their homes motionless corpses,
68. As though they never dwelt therein. Behold! (The people of) Thamud disbelieved in their Lord. Away with (the people of) Thamud.
69. Indeed Our messengers (angels) came to Abraham with glad tidings, saying: “Peace!” (Abraham) answered: “Peace,” not delaying to bring a roasted calf.
70. But when he saw that their hands did not extend towards it, he mistrusted them and conceived fear of them. “Do not fear us,” they said; “We are sent to Lot’s people.”
71. His wife was standing by; she laughed, then We bestowed upon her the glad tidings of Isaac and after him Jacob.
72. She said: “O woe unto me! Shall I bear a son (now that) I am (extremely) old? This indeed is amazing!”
73. They said: “Do you wonder at the decree of God? God’s mercy and His blessings be upon you, O people of the House! Indeed He (alone) is Praiseworthy, all-Glorious!”
74. When the awe had gone away from Abraham and the glad tidings came to him, he began pleading with Us (on behalf of) the people of Lot.
75. Indeed Abraham was indeed forbearing, compassionate, oft-returning (to God).
76. “O Abraham! Forsake this! Indeed the decree of your Lord has come to pass, and verily to them a torment shall come (that is) irreversible.”
77. When Our messengers (angels) came to Lot, he was grieved for them and felt his arm straitened to protect them and said: “This is a distressful day.”
78. His people came rushing to him, for aforetime they did evil deeds. “O my people! These are my daughters; they are purer for you, so guard yourselves against (the punishment of) God, and do not disgrace me regarding my guests. Is there anyone among you whose mind is sound?”
79. They said: “Indeed you know that we have no need for your daughters, and you very well know what we intend (to do).”
80. He said: “Would that I had strength to resist you or betake myself to a strong supporter.”
81. They said: “O Lot! Verily we are messengers from your Lord! They shall never reach you! So, depart with your people while a part of the night remains, and let none of you turn back-save your wife. Surely what befalls them shall befalls her too; their appointed time is surely the morning; is not the morning nigh?”
82. So when Our decree came to pass, We turned their towns upside down and rained on them hard stones of baked clay, (spreading) layer on layer,
83. Marked (for punishment) with your Lord; nor are their ruins distant from the unjust ones.
84. To (the people of) Midian (We sent) their brother Shu’ayb. He said: “O my people! Worship God (alone); you have no god other than Him, and do not give short measure and weight; verily I see you in prosperity, and verily I fear for you the torment of an all-Encompassing Day.
85. “And O my people! Give full measure and (correct) weight in justice, and do not defraud people of their things, and do not act corruptly in the earth, making mischief therein.
86. “That which is left by God to you is good for you, if you are believers, but I am not a keeper over you.”
87. They said: “O Shu’ayb! Does your religion enjoin you that we should forsake what our fathers worshipped or that we (should forsake to) do with our property what we please? Forsooth you are the one forbearing, the right-minded.”
88. He said: “O my people! Do you not see if I am on a clear sign (guidance) from my Lord, and (He) has provided me from Himself with sustenance (pure and) good, and that I do not desire that in opposition to you I betake myself to that from which I forbid you? I desire naught but the reform of what I am able to do; my guidance is with none but God; on Him (alone) do I rely, and to Him (alone) do I turn (for aid).
89. “And, O my people! Do not let your opposition to me cause you to sin lest befalls you that which is like what befell the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih; nor the people of Lot are far off from you.
90. “Ask forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him (repentant); verily my lord is all-Merciful, Loving, Kind.”
91. They said: “O Shu’ayb! We do not understand much of what you say, and most surely we see you weak amongst us, and were it not for your family, we would surely have stoned you, and you are not powerful against us.”
92. He said: “Is my family more esteemed by you than God? And you cast Him behind your backs neglectfully? Indeed, my Lord encompasses all that you do.
93. “And O my people! Act according to your ability; I, too, am acting; soon will you come to know on whom comes the torment that will disgrace him, and who it is that lies and watches; verily, I, too, am watching with you.”
94. When Our decree came to pass, We delivered Shu’ayb and those who believed with him by mercy from Us, and the (mighty) blast overtook those who did injustice so they became in their homes motionless corpses,
95. As though they had not dwelt therein. Behold! Away with (the people of) Midian, even as (the people of) Thamud were cast away.
96. Indeed We sent Moses with Our signs, and an authority (which was) manifest,
97. To Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they followed the bidding of Pharaoh, (though) the bidding of Pharaoh was not a right directive.
98. He shall lead his people on the Day of Resurrection, and bring them down to the Fire; but woeful will be the leading and the place led to.
99. They are followed by a curse in this (life) and also on the Day of Resurrection, and woeful is the gift which shall be given (to them).
100. This is of the account of the communities We relate to you (O Our Messenger Muhammad). Of them some are standing and some have been mown down (by the passage of time).
101. We did no injustice to them; they were unjust to their own selves; so, their gods, whom they invoked besides God, did not avail them aught when the decree of your Lord came to pass; they did not add (aught to their lot but perdition).
102. Such is the grasp (of the punishment) of your Lord when He grasps the towns while they are unjust. Indeed His retribution is painful, severe.
103. Verily, in this there is a sign for him that fears the chastisement of the hereafter. This is a day for which mankind shall be gathered together, and this day shall be witnessed (by all).
104. We do not delay it except to an appointed term.
105. When it approaches, no soul shall speak but by His leave; then (some) of them shall be wretched and some blessed.
106. As for those who shall be doomed, these shall be (hurled) into the Fire; for them shall be sighing and groaning therein.
107. They shall abide therein so long as the heavens and the earth endure, except that which your Lord wills. Surely your Lord is the (Mighty) Doer of whatsoever He pleases.
108. As for those who will be blessed, they shall be in the garden (Paradise) abiding therein so long as the heavens and the earth endure, except that which your Lord wills; (it will be) an unceasing gift.
109. Be, therefore, in no doubt concerning what these people worship; they worship just as their fathers worshipped before, and verily We will pay them back in full their due share without any rebate.
110. Indeed We bestowed the Book unto Moses, but variance was created in it; had no word gone forth from your Lord, the matter would surely have been decided between them, and verily they are in doubt (about the Qur’an which is) disquieting (to them).
111. Indeed to all will your Lord pay back in full their recompense for all their deeds; verily He is fully aware of all that they do.
112. Stand then fast (O Our Messenger Muhammad) on the Right Path as you are commanded (by your Lord), and also he who has turned (to God) with you, and (O men) do not be inordinate. Indeed He well sees whatever you do.
113. Do not incline to those who act unjustly lest the Fire should touch you, for there is no protector for you be-sides God, nor shall you be helped.
114. Establish prayer in the two ends of the day, and at the approaches of the night. Indeed the good deeds take away the evil ones; this is a reminder for the (believers who are) mindful (of their Lord).
115. Be patient, for verily God does not suffer the recompense of the righteous ones to be lost.
116. But why were not there any generations before you, those endowed with understanding, forbidding mischief on earth, except a few of those whom We delivered from among them? Those who did injustice followed what they were made to enjoy (of the plenty), and they were guilty.
117. Nor was your Lord to destroy communities unjustly while their people were righteous.
118. Had your Lord willed, He would certainly have made mankind a single (unified) nation, but they will never cease to differ,
119. Except he on whom your Lord has had mercy, and for this did He create them; the promise of your Lord is fulfilled: I will certainly fill Hell with the jinn and man altogether.
120. All that We relate to you of the accounts of the messengers is to confirm your heart therewith. The truth has come to you in this, and an admonition and a reminder to the believers.
121. Say (O Our Messenger Muhammad) to those who do not believe: “Act as you wish; verily we, too, shall act,
122. “And wait! For verily we, too, shall wait;
123. “And God’s is the unseen (worlds) of the heavens and the earth, and to Him (only) is the whole affair returned, so worship Him and rely (only) on Him; your Lord is not heedless of what you do.”
