In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. Ha’, Meem.
2. The revelation of the Book (Qur’an) is from God, the Almighty, the all-Knowing,
3. Who forgives sins and accepts repentance; He is severe in chastising, Lord of bounties; there is no god but He; to Him is the ultimate end of the journey.
4. None dispute about the signs of God save those who disbelieve; so, let not their going to and from the cities deceive you.
5. The people of Noah before them disbelieved, and so did the parties after them; every nation schemed against their own messenger to seize him, and they disputed in falsehood that they might thereby render the truth null; so, I seized them; how (terrifying) was then My retribution?
6. Thus did your Lord’s sentence prove true regarding those who disbelieved that they were the inmates of the Fire.
7. Those who bear the Throne, and those around it, celebrate the praise of their Lord and believe in Him; they seek forgiveness for those who believe in Him: “O Lord! You comprehend all things in (Your) mercy and knowledge; therefore, forgive those who turn (to You) and follow Your way, and save them from the torment of Hell-fire;
8. “Lord! Admit them into the ever-blissful gardens which You have promised them, their wives and descendants; You are the all-Mighty, the all-Wise;
9. “Keep them away from evil; whomsoever you keep from evil, You have on this Day bestowed mercy upon him; that is the mighty achievement.”
10. Verily, to those who disbelieve shall be a voice crying: “God’s hatred (of you) is greater than your hatred of your own selves when you were called upon to believe and you (instead) disbelieved.”
11. They shall say: “O Lord! Twice did You cause us to die, and twice did You grant us life; (now) we do confess our sins; is there then a way to get out (of this)?”
12. (It is so because) when God alone was called upon, you disbelieved, and when associates were attributed to Him, you believed (in them); all authority is God’s, the Most Sublime, the Most Great.
13. He it is Who shows you His signs and sends down your sustenance for you from the heaven; none heeds this but he who turns (to Him).
14. So call upon God, devoting religion exclusively to Him, though averse the disbelievers are.
15. Exalter of the ranks, Lord of the Throne; He causes forth the spirit at His own behest on whomsoever He wills of His servants that He may warn man of the Day of the Meeting.
16. A Day when they come forth (from their graves), when naught about them shall be hidden from God: “Whose is the Kingdom this day? God’s, the One, the Subduer.”
17. This Day shall every soul be recompensed for what it earned; no injustice shall ever be done; verily God is quick in reckoning.
18. And warn them of the approaching Day when hearts rise up to the throats choking; there shall be no sincere friends for the unjust, nor any intercessor to prevail.
19. He knows the deceit of the eye and what the hearts conceal.
20. God judges in truth; those whom they call upon besides Him cannot judge anything; verily God is the all-Hearing, the all-Seeing.
21. Have not they travelled through the world and seen how (destructive) has the end of those who were before them been? They were mightier in strength than these ones and more in relics on earth, but God seized them for their sinning, and no shelter was there for them to protect them against God’s Wrath.
22. This is so because there came to them their messengers with clear proofs, but they disbelieved; so, God seized them; verily He is Almighty, Vehement in retribution.
23. Indeed We sent Moses with Our signs and a clear authority,
24. To Pharaoh and Haman and Korah, but they said: “A sorcerer and a great liar!”
25. He brought them the truth from Us, yet they said: “Slay the sons of those who believe with him, and let their women live;” yet the plot of the disbelievers is nothing but utter failure.
26. Pharaoh said: “Let me slay Moses myself, and let him call upon his Lord; verily I fear lest he might change your religion, or he might cause mischief in the land.”
27. Moses said: “Indeed I take refuge with my Lord and yours from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning.”
28. A man who was a believer from among the house of Pharaoh, concealing his faith, said: “Do you slay a man for saying that his Lord is God? And indeed he has brought you clear proofs (of his mission) from your Lord. If he is a liar, his lie will weigh against him, and if he is truthful, then some of what he warns you with will surely afflict you; verily God does not guide any extravagant liar.
29. “O people! Yours is the kingdom today, prevailing in the land, but who will help us against the Wrath of God when it comes upon us?” Pharaoh said: “I show you naught but what I myself see, and I guide you but to a right way.”
30. He who believed said: “O people! Verily I fear for you the like of what befell the parties;
31. “The like of what befell the people of Noah, Ad and Thamud, and those who succeeded them; God does not intend injustice to His servants.
32. “And O people! I fear for you the Day of Calling (each other) out;
33. “The day when you are turned back; there shall be no saviour for you then from God; whomsoever God allows to stray, no guide shall ever be for him.”
34. Indeed, Joseph came to you before with clear proofs, but you doubted what he had brought; when he died, you said: “God will not raise any messenger after him.” Thus does God allow him who is an extravagant doubtful to stray.
35. Those who dispute about the signs of God with no authority coming to them are greatly despised by God and by those who believe in Him; thus does God set a seal over every heart which is arrogant and haughty.
36. Pharaoh said: “O Haman! Build me a tower so that I may reach the means of access,
37. “To heavens, so that I may mount up to reach the God of Moses, and I surely think he is a liar.” Thus was Pharaoh’s evil deed made seemingly fair to him, and he was turned away from the (right) way; and Pharaoh’s plot was only to his own ruin.
38. The one who believed said: “O people! Follow me so that I show you the way to the right guidance;
39. “O people! The life of this world is only (a transient) enjoyment; verily the hereafter is the lasting abode.
40. “Whosoever commits an evil deed, he shall only be recompensed with the like of it, and whosoever male or female does good deeds, while being a believer, they shall enter the garden wherein they shall be provided with sustenance without measure.
41. “O people! How is it that I invite you to salvation and you invite me to the Fire?
42. “Do you invite me to disbelieve in God and associate with Him that for which I have no knowledge, and I invite you to the Almighty, the oft-Forgiving Lord?
43. “No doubt that what you invite me to has no right to be invoked in this world nor in the hereafter, and our return is to God; the extravagant ones shall be the inmates of the Fire.
44. “And you shall remember what I say to you, and I entrust my affair to God; verily God is ever watchful for His servants.”
45. God protected him from the evils of what they planned; the awful chastisement surrounded the people of Pharaoh.
46. They are exposed to the Fire every morn and eve, and on the Day when the Hour (of reckoning) is established, “Admit the people of Pharaoh into the most severe of the torment.”
47. When they wrangle with each other in the Fire; the weak shall say to those who were arrogant: “Verily, we were your followers; will you then relieve us from some of the (torture of the) Fire?”
48. Those who were arrogant shall say: “Verily God has judged between His servants.”
49. Those in the Fire shall say to the guards of Hell: “Call upon your Lord to decrease the torture (at least) a day.”
50. They shall say: “Did not your messengers come to you with clear proofs?” They shall say: “Yes.” They (guards) shall say: “Call (upon Him) yourselves; the call of the disbeliever shall be in utter vain.”
51. Verily We help Our messengers and those who believe in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses stand forth,
52. The Day when excuses shall not benefit the unjust ones, and for them there shall be a curse; for them shall be an evil abode.
53. Indeed, We bestowed guidance upon Moses, and we permitted the children of Israel to inherit the Book,
54. A guidance and a reminder to those endowed with understanding.
55. So (Muhammad) be patient; verily the promise of God is true; seek protection for your (followers’) shortcomings, and celebrate the praise of your Lord in the evening and in the morning.
56. Verily those who dispute about the signs of God without any authority coming to them, there is nothing in their hearts but (the desire) to become great which they shall never attain; therefore, seek refuge with God; verily He is the all-Hearing, the all-Seeing.
57. Surely the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of people, yet most people do not know.
58. Not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor those who believe and do good deeds are equal to the doers of evil; little do you reflect.
59. Verily the Hour (of reckoning) is to approach; there is no doubt therein, yet most people do not believe.
60. Your Lord says: “Call unto Me; I will answer you.” Verily those who are too arrogant to serve Me shall soon enter Hell in disgrace.
61. God is He Who has made the night for you a rest, and the day a light; verily God is gracious to people, but most people are not thankful.
62. That is God, your Lord, Creator of everything; there is no god but He; why then are you (still) turned away?
63. Thus did those who denied the signs of God turn away.
64. God is He Who made the earth for you a resting place, and the heavens a canopy; He shaped your form, making it (look) good, and provided you the sustenance of goodly things; that is God your Lord; hallowed is God, Lord of the worlds.
65. He is the ever-Living; there is no god but He; so, call upon Him devoting to Him the religion; all praise is God’s, Lord of the worlds.
66. Say: “Verily I am forbidden to worship those whom you call upon besides God when clear proofs have (already) come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit myself to the Lord of the worlds.
67. He it is Who created you from dust, then from a lifegerm, then from a clot, then He brings you forth as a babe, then you may reach your full strength, or you may age; of you are those who are caused to die early, and that you may reach the appointed term, haply you may understand.
68. He it is Who gives life and causes death, and when He decrees an affair, He only says: “Be,” and it is.
69. Do you not see how those who dispute about the signs of God are turned away?
70. Those who falsify the Book and what We revealed to Our messengers shall soon come to know,
71. Fetters and chains shall surround their necks, and they shall be dragged-
72. Into the boiling water, then in the Fire to be burned;
73. Then it shall be said to them: “Where are those whom you used to associate (as gods)-
74. “Besides God?” They shall say: “They have gone away from us; nay, we used not to call upon anything before.” Thus does God leave the disbelievers stray.
75. - “This is so because you exulted in the land without any right, and you were insolent;
76. “Enter the gate of Hell to abide therein.” Wretched shall then be the arrogant ones.”
77. So be patient; verily the promise of God is true; whether We let you see what We threaten them with, or whether We cause you to die (before then), to Us they shall all be returned.
78. And verily We sent messengers before you (O Our Messenger Muhammad). Of them there are those whom We have mentioned to you, and of them are those whom We have not; it was not given to any messenger to bring a sign (miracle) save with God’s leave, but when the behest of God came, it was executed in truth, and those who stood on falsehood were then the losers.
79. God is He Who created the cattle for you to ride on some and eat of some others.
80. For you in them are other benefits, and that you may achieve thereby the need you cherish in your hearts, and upon them, and on board the ships, are you borne.
81. He shows you His signs; which of the signs of God will you then deny?
82. Have they not travelled in the earth and seen how the end of those before them was? They were more (numerous) than these and mightier in strength, and (also) greater in relics in the world, but what they were earning did not avail them aught.
83. When their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they exulted in what measure they had with them of knowledge, but that which they were wont to scoff encompassed them.
84. But when they witnessed Our punishment, they said: “We believe in God alone, and we deny what we used to associate with Him.”
85. Yet their faith then did not avail them upon witnessing Our punishment; (such is) the procedure of God which has indeed been employed concerning His servants; it is then that the disbelievers lost their all.
