In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. Everything in the heavens and the earth praises the glory of God; He is the ever-Prevalent, the all-Wise.
2. He it is Who caused those who disbelieved from among the people of the Book to go out from their homes to the first banishment. You deemed not that they would go out, while they thought that their fortresses would protect them against God, but (the Wrath of) God came upon them from whence they did not look for Him and caused (such) terror into their hearts that they demolished their homes with their own hands and the hands of the believers; therefore, get warned O you who have eyes!
3. Were it not that God had decreed against them the exile, certainly He would have chastised them in this world; and for them in the hereafter shall be the chastisement of the Fire.
4. That is so because they opposed God and His Messenger, and whosoever opposes God, then verily God is severe in retribution.
5. Whatever you cut down of palm-trees or spare it standing upon its roots is only by God’s permission, and that He may put the transgressors to shame.
6. And whatever God bestows upon His Messenger from them, while you make no expedition with cavalry or camelry, God grants authority to His messengers over whomsoever He pleases, and God has power over all things.
7. Whatever God has bestowed upon His Messenger (taken) from the people of the towns belongs to God, to the Messenger, to his (Prophet’s) kindred, the orphans, the needy and the wayfarer, so that it may not circulate among the rich among you, and whatever the Messenger gives you, accept it, and from whatever he prevents you, stay away (therefrom), and fear God; verily God is severe in retribution.
8. (And also) for the poor immigrants, those who were expelled from their homes and possessions seeking God’s Grace and Pleasure, and aiding God and His Messenger; these are the truthful ones.
9. And those (who believed) before them and had made (their) homes (in Medina) and are (firm) in faith, love those who have fled to them and find in their hearts no need for what has been given to them, and they even prefer them over their own selves, though their own lot is poverty. Whosoever is saved from the niggardliness of his own self is surely the successful one.
10. And they who come after them say: “O Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in (accepting) faith, and create not in our hearts any ill-will to those who believe. Lord! Verily You are the ever-Kind, the all-Merciful.”
11. Have you not seen those who are hypocrites? They say to those of their brethren who disbelieve from among the people of the Book: “If you are driven out, we shall certainly go with you, and we will not obey anyone at all in as much as you are concerned, and if you are fought, we will certainly help you.” God bears witness that they are liars.
12. Nay! If they were driven out, they will not go out with them, and if they are fought, they would not help them. Even if they help them, they will certainly turn their backs (fleeing), then they shall not themselves be helped.
13. Of surety you are more vehement in being feared in their hearts than God, for they are people who do not understand.
14. They will not fight you together except in fortified towns or from behind walls. Their fighting among themselves is severe; you may deem them united, but their hearts are divided. That is so because they are people who do not understand.
15. They are like those who preceded lately, (who also) tasted the evil result of their own deeds, and for them is a painful chastisement.
16. Like Satan who says to man: “Disbelieve!” and when he disbelieves, he says: “Verily I dissociate myself from you. Verily I fear God, Lord of the worlds.”
17. So the end of both of those two (Satan and disbelievers) is that the two shall be in the Fire to abide therein forever, and that shall be the recompense of the unjust.
18. O you who believe! Fear God! Let every soul (carefully) look well to what (provision) it has sent forth for the morrow, and fear God; verily God is all-Aware of whatever you do.
19. Do not be like those who forsook God. So He made them forsake their own selves; those are the transgressors.
20. Equal are not the fellows of the Fire and the dwellers of the Garden. The dwellers of the Garden are they who are the successful.
21. Had We revealed this Qur’an on a mountain, you would have certainly seen it (mountain) humbling itself, and being rent asunder for fear of God. And We set forth these similitudes to mankind that they may reflect.
22. He is God; there is no god but He, Knower of the unseen and the seen; He is the Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
23. He is God; there is no God but He, the King, the Holy, the Peace-loving, the Guardian, the ever-Prevalent, the Supreme, the Great Absolute! Hallowed is God above what they associate with Him.
24. He is God, the Creator, Maker, Fashioner; His are all the excellent names; hallows Him everything in the heavens and the earth; He is the ever-Prevalent, the all-Wise.
