In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1. O you who is wrapped up in the mantle!
2. Rise by night to pray but a little.
3. Half of it or curtail a little.
4. Or add to it, and recite the Qur’an in a regulated tone.
5. Verily We will soon send down upon you weighty words.
6. Verily the rising at night when impression is intense and straightest in word.
7. Verily, for you is the day-long occupation with duties,
8. And remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourselves to Him exclusively.
9. Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; take Him then as the Protector.
10. And be patient against whatever they say, and avoid them a decorous avoidance.
11. And leave Me (to deal with the) the falsifiers, possessors of bounties, and respite them for a while.
12. Verily with Us are strong fetters and a flaming Fire.
13. The food that chokes, and torment that is dire.
14. On the Day when the earth and mountains are shaken and the mountains become heaps of sand, rendered loose;
15. Verily We have sent you a Messenger to witness against you, as We sent Pharaoh a messenger,
16. But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, whereupon We seized him with a severe seizure.
17. How then will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, against the Day which shall turn children grey-headed?
18. The heavens shall be rent asunder by it; His promise is always be fulfilled.
19. Verily this is a reminder; so let him, whoever wills, adopt the (Right) Way to his Lord.
20. Verily, your Lord knows that you stand up (in the night prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, and (sometimes) half of it, and (sometimes) a third thereof, with a group of those with you; and God well measures the night and the day; He knows that you can never take (correct) account of it; so, He turns to you (with mercy); therefore recite whatever is easy (in prayers) to be recited of the Qur’an. He knows that there may be some sick among you, and others travelling in the world seeking the grace of God, and others fighting in the way of God, so recite as much as it can easily be recited thereof, establish regular prayers, pay zakat and offer God a goodly loan. Whatever good you send beforehand for your own selves, you will surely find it with God. That is the best and the greatest recompense; and seek God’s forgiveness; verily God is oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
