Imam Hussein (A.S) - Islam Guidance

  • Ruqayyah bint al Hussein (S.A)

Hazrat Ruqayyah (S.A) was a vivacious child, full of love and happiness. Everyone loved Ruqayyah (S.A). She was also a very religious girl. From the age of two she took great care to make sure that her head and face were properly covered as per the Islamic dress of code Hijab when in public.
Ruqayyah (S.A) was Imam Hussein's (A.S) most beloved child. Our Third Imam (A.S) used to pray for a daughter in his night Prayer (Namaz E Shab) and the birth of Ruqayyah (S.A) was a result of those night prayers. Imam Hussein (A.S) was often heard to say, "A house without Sakina would not be worth living in!" She always had a sweet and cheerful smile and a very friendly nature. Other children sought her company as much as the grown-ups did. She was very generous and always shared whatever she had with others.
There was a special bond between Hazrat Abbas (A.S) and Ruqayyah (S.A). Hazrat Abbas (A.S) loved her more than he did his own children. If Ruqayyah (S.A) requested for anything, Hazrat Abbas (A.S) would not rest until he satisfied her request. There was nothing that Hazrat Abbas (A.S) would not do to make Ruqayyah (S.A) happy.
During the journey from Medina to Makkah and then Makkah to Karbala, Hazrat Abbas (A.S) was often seen riding up to the Mehmil (A decorated framework on a Camel) in which Ruqayyah (S.A) sat to make sure that she had everything she wanted. Ruqayyah (S.A) loved her uncle just as much. While in Medina she would visit, several times a day, the house in which Hazrat Abbas (A.S) lived with his family and his mother, Hazrat Ummul Baneen (S.A).
Like any other four-five year old when Ruqayyah (S.A) went to bed at night, she wanted to spend some time with her father. Imam Hussein (A.S) would tell her stories of the Prophets (A.S) and of the battles fought by her grand-father Imam Ali (A.S). She would rest her head on her father's chest and Imam Hussein (A.S) would not move from her until she fell asleep. When from the second of Muharram the armies of Yazid began to gather at Karbala, Imam Hussein (A.S) said to his sister Hazrat Zainab (S.A), "The time has come for you to get Sakina used to going to sleep without me being there." Ruqayyah (S.A) would follow her father at night and Imam Hussein (A.S) had to gently take her to aunt, Hazrat Zainab (S.A) or Hazrat Rubab (S.A) - her mother.
At Karbala from the seventh Muharram, access to water was blocked by the army of Yazid and water became scarce. Ruqayyah (S.A) shared whatever little water she had with other children. When soon there was no water at all, the thirsty children would look at Ruqayyah (S.A) hopefully, and because she could not help them she would have tears in her eyes. Ruqayyah’s (S.A) lips were parched with thirst.
On the day of Ashura - the 10th of Muharram, Ruqayyah (S.A) gave her Mashk (water carrier) to Hazrat Abbas (A.S) to get some water for her and the children. When Hazrat Abbas (A.S) went to fetch water, the children gathered round Ruqayyah (S.A) with their little cups, knowing that as soon as Hazrat Abbas (A.S) brought any water, Ruqayyah (S.A) would first make sure that they had some before taking any herself. When Ruqayyah (S.A) saw Imam Hussein (A.S) bringing the blood drenched Alam (Flag) she knew that her uncle Hazrat Abbas (A.S) had been martyred. From that day on Ruqayyah (S.A) never complained of thirst. Ruqayyah (S.A) never again asked anyone for water. Hazrat Zainab (S.A) would persuade her to take a few sips, but she herself would never ask for water or complain of thirst.
Then came the time when the earth shook and Ruqayyah (S.A) became an orphan! But even then she always thought of the others first. She would console her mother, Hazrat Rubab (S.A) on the death of her six month old brother, Ali Asghar (A.S) and when she saw any other lady or child weeping Ruqayyah (S.A) would put her little arms around her.
From the time when Imam Hussein (A.S) was martyred in the battle field, Ruqayyah (S.A) forgot to smile! Kufa saw her as a little girl lost in thought. Quite often she would sit up at night. When asked if she wanted anything, she would say, "I just heard a baby cry? Is it Asghar? He must be calling out for me!"
Knowing that her weeping upset her mother, Ruqayyah (S.A) would cry silently and quickly wipe away her tears! In the prison in Damascus she would stare at the flock of birds flying to their nests at sunset and innocently ask Hazrat Zainab (S.A), "Will Sakina ever be going home like those birds flying to their homes?"

  • The Historical Event

On the 24th of Zul Hijjah 10 A.H., the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) came out for Mubahila.
Early next morning the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) sent Salman al Farsi to the open place, fixed outside the city for the historic event, to erect a small shelter for him and those he intended to take along with him for the contest.
On the opposite side appeared the Christian priests, while at the appointed hour the Christians witnessed the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) entering the field with Imam Hussein (A.S) in his lap, Imam Hassan (A.S) holding his finger, and walking beside him, Lady Fatima (S.A) and followed by Imam Ali (A.S).
The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) on reaching the appointed spot stationed himself with his daughter, her two sons and her husband, raising his hands towards the heaven said:
Lord these are the People of my House. The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) said to them: "when I pray you should say Ameen."
In obedience to the verse of Mubahila sent by Allah , the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) had brought Imam Hassan (A.S) and Imam Hussein (A.S) as his "sons", Hazrat Fatima (S.A) as his "women" and Imam Ali (A.S) as his "self".
The Chief Pontiff on knowing that the baby in the lap of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) was his young grandson, Imam Hussein (A.S), the child walking holding the Prophet's (P.B.U.H&H.P) hand was his first grandson, Imam Hassan (A.S), the Lady behind him was daughter, his only surviving issue was Fatima (S.A) the mother of the two children and the one who followed the Lady was his son in law, the husband of Fatima (S.A), addressed the huge crowd of the people who had gathered on the spot, and addressed them saying:
“By God, I see the faces which, if they pray to God for mountains to move from their places, the mountains will immediately move!”
O believers in the Jesus of Nazareth, I will tell you the truth that should ye fail to enter into some agreement with Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) and if these souls whom Muhammad (P.B.U.H&H.P) has brought with him, curse you; ye will be wiped out of existence to the last day of the life of the earth!
The people readily agreed to the advice counseled by their Leader.
They beseeched the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) to give up the idea of the agreed Mubahila and requested for themselves to be allowed to continue their faith, offering to pay ' Jizya '.
    [Al Tabari, Commentary of the Quran, v 2 p 192 – 193]

When the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) heard these words he remarked:
“By God, had the Christians of Najran contested with us, they would have been transformed into monkeys and swine. Fire would have rained over them.”

  • The Month of Muharram

Imam Reza (A.S) said, "With the advent of the month of Muharram, my father Imam Kadhim (A.S) would never be seen laughing; gloom and sadness would overcome him for (the first) ten days of the month; and when the tenth day of the month would dawn, it would be a day of tragedy, grief and weeping for him and He would say, "This is the day on which Imam Hussein (A.S) was killed".

Narrated from Imam Sadiq (A.S) from his Father (A.S) from his Grand Father (A.S):

أن حسين بن علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) دخل يوما على الحسن (عليه السلام) فلما نظر إليه بكى فقال ما يبكيك قال أبكي لما يصنع بك فقال الحسن (عليه السلام) إن الذي يؤتى إلي سم يدس إلي فأقتل به و لكن لا يوم كيومك يا أبا عبد الله

Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Talib (A.S) entered on the day of (Martyrdom) Al-Hassan (A.S) and wept when he looked at him. Imam Hassan (A.S) said: What makes you cry?
He replied: that which is brought to you (Poison).
Imam Hassan (A.S) said: "And there is no day like your day O'Aba Abdillah."

  • The Saddest Night

The night after the day of Ashura is called the Shaam e Ghareebaan. It was a very difficult time for all the family of Imam Hussein (A.S) when he had been killed, the evil men of Umar ibn Saad’s army started to loot the body of the Imam. They took everything: his armor, his clothes, his shoes, his sword, even the ring from his finger. Then Umar ibn Saad ordered his troops on horseback to trample the Imam Hussein’s body.
Then they rode to the tents where the widows and the orphans were weeping. They set fire to the tents and started to take anything they could find. They snatched the earrings that Hazrat Sukayna (S.A) was wearing and her ears started to bleed. They hit the ladies with their lances and took away their chador, the hijab that the ladies had on their heads. They went to the place where the fourth Imam Zayn al-Abidin(A.S) was lying ill with fever and took away his mat. They put heavy chains around his hands, feet and neck.
The ladies and the children ran from one tent to another till there was one tent left. When the last tent was set on fire, Hazrat Zaynab (S.A) asked her nephew, the Imam: “What shall we do? Do we come out or stay inside? ”
The Imam said: “go out” so they all came out of the burning tent. Hazrat Zaynab and Umm Kulthum, the sisters of Imam Hussein (A.S) gathered all the children and the ladies together. When they counted the children, some were missing, so Umm Kulsoom (S.A) went to find them. She saw two little children on the floor. When she lifted them up, she saw that they were dead. They had been trampled by the horses of Yazeed’s army. She burst out crying: “O my Allah!”
Hazrat Zaynab (S.A) could not find her Brother Imam Hussein’s daughter Sukayna(S.A) anywhere. She went searching, to find Sukayna, and called, “Where are you my dear Sukayna?” At last, she found Sukayna by a body, which had no head. Sukayna was clinging to it crying: “O my father, my father, why didn’t you come back? Look at us. Our tents have been burnt. My earrings were snatched! Please come back.”
Hazrat Zaynab (S.A) took her little niece in her arms; “Come with me” she said. And they went back to the rest of the ladies. The army of Umar ibn Saad was happy and started to eat their dinner. They beat their drums in happiness. They kept crying. As the night passed, they said their prayer and Imam Zayn al-Abidin (A.S) went into prostration. Hazrat Zaynab (S.A) stayed awake to guard the Ahlul-Bayt. She thought of her brother Abbas, who used to do this every night. Suddenly she saw someone coming.
“Stop! We have nothing left now to loot. The children have just slept. Don’t move.” But the rider came closer. ”Stop, listen to me, I am Zeinab, the daughter of Ali”
The rider said “O Zaynab, my daughter. This is your father Ali. I have come, so you can rest. “Hazrat Zainab (S.A) cried:
O father, where were you when my Abbas lost his arms?
O father, where were you when my Akbar was killed?
O father, where were you when my Asghar was killed?
O father, where were you when my Brother Hussein’s head was cut?
O father, where were you when Sukayna was hit on her face?
O father, where were you when Ali Zayn al-Abidin was made a prisoner?
O father, where were you when my chador was snatched?
“Zaynab my dear, you have a lot more to suffer and a long journey ahead. Be patient. Allah will help you.” Came the reply.

Unvirtuous Elites | Shabath ibn Ribi

This is the story of Kufan. This is the story of Shabath, who wrote a letter to Imam Hussein inviting him to Kufah, and then later became one of the commanders of Umar ibn Saad's army in Karbala. Shabath is an example of those people whose hypocrisy and disloyalty resulted, time and again, in the killing of the Ahl al-Bayt. Shabath is one of the reasons Imam Mahdi is in Occultation.

Unvirtuous Elites | Sulayman ibn Surad

Sulayman ibn Surad, Who we actually remember as a good man and a lover of the Holy Household. But despite all his qualities, Sulayman did not support his Imam when needed, and because of his mistake, he missed out. The scary thing is this: despite his regret, he was never able to make up for his missed opportunity. The downfall of a good human being is often their inability to recognize an opportunity and seize it.

  • Who were the companions of Imam Hussein (A.S)?

They were the faithful friends, helpers and companions of Imam Hussein (A.S). Some were old like Habib ibn Madhahir; others like Wahab al Kalbi were young. Some were noblemen like Zuhayr ibn Qayn, others like Jawn bin Huwai were slaves. Some like Salim and Amir came from towns like Kufa and Basra; others had lived in the desert. There were men like Ammar and Muslim ibn Awsaja, who had been with the Prophet (P.B.U.H&H.P) and Nafi and Jundab, who were friends of Imam Ali (A.S). They were all killed fighting bravely against the army of Umar ibn Saad, defending Islam on the day of Ashura and the Imam (A.S) wept for each of them.

  • Why did they kill Ali-Asghar (A.S) in Karbala?

Ali Asghar(A.S) was only six months old in Karbala. He was the son of Imam Hussein (A.S) and Rubab. On the day of Ashura it was very hot and there was no water for the family of the Imam (A.S) for three days. His mother could not feed him either, as there was no milk. When the Imam (A.S) called out “Is there anyone to help me?” there was loud crying from the ladies. The Imam (A.S) came into the tent.
Hazrat Zainab (S.A) said: “O my brother Hussein, since Asgharheard your call, he has not stopped crying.” The Imam (A.S) said, “Bring him to me. I will take him and see if he can get some water.” Rubab brought the baby Ali Asghar(A.S) from his crib and kissed him goodbye.
Imam Hussein (A.S) took the baby in his arms and going to the army of Yazid said: “See how thirsty my Asgharis. His lips are dry and he can hardly open his eyes. He has done no harm to anyone. Give him some water.”
Hearing this, some of the soldiers started to cry, but Umar Saad said to Hurmala: “Stop Hussein’s words”
Hurmala aimed an arrow at the baby’s neck. The arrow hit its mark and the baby was killed in the arms of his loving father, Imam Hussein (A.S). The Imam (A.S), kissed the baby then took a step forward, and then went backwards. He did this again and again 7 times saying:

"انا لله و انا الیه راجعون"

From Allah we come and to Allah we return

He buried the baby with his own hands in the hot sand.

  • Why Imam Hussein (A.S) travel to Iraq?

When it came to Hussein’s knowledge that Yazid had appointed `Amr ibn Sad ibn Alas. As the head of an army, ordering him to take charge of the pilgrimage caravans and to kill Hussein (A.S) wherever he could find him, he decided to leave Mecca before finishing the pilgrimage and be satisfied with performing only the Umra because he hated that the sanctity of the House might otherwise be violated.
